TOP WOMEN'S GAMES

GC&SU (9-9, 4-7) at USC Aiken (8-9, 4-6)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST
USC Upstate (10-8, 7-4) at Columbus State (11-9, 4-6)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST

If the current Peach Belt Conference standings are any indication, the league has had one of its most mediocre seasons in recent memory, at least in women's basketball. And that mediocrity is evident in the two games presented in the entry listed above. All four teams lost last Saturday, as GC&SU lost to Clayton State 68-62, North Georgia routed USCA 78-59, Upstate fell to UNC Pembroke 66-58, and CSU was defeated at Armstrong Atlantic State 47-43.

TOP MEN'S GAME

USC Upstate (13-4, 8-3) at Columbus State (14-5, 8-2)--Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST

While North Georgia has dominated the women's race in the PBC with a perfect 12-0 conference mark thus far, it's a much different story with the men's standings, as five teams are separated by just half a game through last weekend's action. Two of those five squads will meet in the Lumpkin Center, with the Cougars hosting the Spartans in the re-match of a contest played just nine nights earlier. CSU head coach Herbert Greene earned his 500th win as a collegiate head coach on Jan. 23, at the expense of the Spartans, as the Cougars pulled out a hard-fought 94-89 win on the road. Will Upstate deliver some payback to CSU on the road this mid-week? This game should provide the answer.

2006 D-II SOUTH SPORTS SPRING PREVIEW--PEACH BELT CONFERENCE SOFTBALL

NOTE: Our preseason spring sports outlook continues with a preview of Peach Belt Conference softball.

Kennesaw State and North Florida may have moved on to the NCAA Division I ranks, but the Peach Belt Conference will look to make the most of its new beginning, with USC Upstate looking to improve on its record-setting 2005 season, as the Spartans finished 46-15, and advanced to the NCAA tournament. But teams like Columbus State (who won the PBC tournament last season, and advanced to NCAA regional play) and Francis Marion may very well have a say in who comes out on top. Also, North Georgia, who advanced to the NAIA tournament in its final season in that organization, joins the PBC for the first time in 2006.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

National rankings are courtesy of the WBCA/ESPN/USA Today poll.

#13 Delta State (18-1, 7-1) at #11 Henderson State (17-2, 7-1)--Monday 5:30 p.m. CST

The Lady Reddies host the Lady Statesmen in the second meeting between the two teams this
season. HSU handed DSU its lone loss of the season thus far, a 63-54 setback in the Gulf South Conference West Division opener on Jan. 5. Still, both teams had to hold on to win close games on Saturday, as the Lady Statesmen got by Arkansas Tech 50-46, while the Lady Reddies edged Harding 73-72. Apparently, both squads had to be looking ahead to the big showdown for first place in the GSC West. And that's where the winner of this aforementioned contest will be; all alone atop the division standings.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

National ranking courtesy of the NABC/Division II Bulletin poll.

#11 Delta State (17-1, 8-0) at Henderson State (9-7, 5-3)--Monday 7:30 p.m. CST
Christian Brothers (10-8, 4-4) at Central Arkansas (12-6, 5-3)--Monday 8 p.m. CST

To paraphrase the old "Energizer Bunny" TV commercials of years gone by, the Statesmen just keep winning, and winning, and well, you get the idea. The DSU men won their 13th straight game Saturday night by stomping a slumping Arkansas Tech 84-59. The Statesmen hope to extend to make it 14 straight wins Monday night by knocking off a Reddies team that has won six games in a row.

As for the Buccaneers and the Bears, this game has huge implications as far as who will make the Gulf South Conference tournament out of the West Division, as well as how the seeding will play out. CBU lost a 71-66 heartbreaker at Arkansas-Monticello Thursday night, only to bounce back to defeat Southern Arkansas 81-72 in overtime. The Muleriders, by the way, upset the Bears 60-57 Thursday night, a defeat UCA hopes to bounce back from.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

West Florida (15-3, 6-0) at #23 Valdosta State (13-5, 4-2)--Saturday 2 p.m. EST

To say this is a must-win game for the Lady Blazers is definitely an understatement. After all, not only did VSU lose a game it was supposed to win, a 47-42 setback at Montevallo, the Lady Blazers also fell one game behind arch-rival West Georgia (12-7, 5-1) for second place in the Gulf South Conference East Division. Now VSU must face a red-hot UWF squad that has won nine straight games, with the latest win coming over West Alabama 79-57 Monday night.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Columbus State (14-4, 8-1) at Armstrong Atlantic State (13-4, 7-3)--Saturday 4 p.m. EST
Clayton State (14-3, 7-3) at GC&SU (11-5, 8-2)--Saturday 7:30 p.m. EST

It's getting crowded at the top of the Peach Belt Conference, at least in the men's basketball standings, as CSU took over sole possession of first place after beating the Bobcats 86-81 at home on Wednesday. Now the red-hot Cougars, winners of eight straight contests, must take their act on the road in hopes of extending their winning streak to nine in a row. On the other hand, GC&SU hopes to bounce back against a Clayton State team that has come on strong since starting PBC play at 0-2, with one of those losses coming to the Bobcats in Morrow, Ga. on Dec. 3.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

#13 Delta State (16-1, 5-1) at Ouachita Baptist (14-3, 3-3)--Thursday 6 p.m. CST

The Lady Statesmen make the long trip to Arkadelphia, Ark. to face the Tigers in a key Gulf South Conference West Division clash. After losing their first GSC West matches, the OBU women have won three of their last four league games. Still, the home team faces a tough task in battling a DSU squad that has won five straight contests. If that wasn't enough, the Tigers also find themselves being in the shadow of their cross-street rivals, the Lady Reddies of Henderson State University. Speaking of which, the HSU women will host the Lady Statesmen in a re-match of their GSC West opener on Monday. Henderson State won the first game, 63-54, in Cleveland, Miss. on Jan. 5. But the Lady Statesmen must make a return trip home along the way, facing Arkansas Tech on Saturday.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Christian Brothers (9-7, 3-3) at Arkansas-Monticello (10-7, 3-3)--Thursday 7:30 p.m. CST

The Boll Weevils host the Buccaneers in a game that will have tremendous implications on the Gulf South Conference tournament, as only the top five teams each in both the East and West Divisions, respectively, will advance to the GSC tournament in Tupelo, Miss. The winner of this game could move into a tie for third place in the GSC West with idle Henderson State (8-7,4-3) or maybe to within a half-game of Central Arkansas (12-6, 5-2) for second place, should the Bears lose at Southern Arkansas.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Francis Marion (7-8, 5-4) at USC Upstate (9-7, 6-3)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST

With newcomer North Georgia (14-3, 10-0) steadily separating itself from the rest of the Peach Belt Conference pack, and second place Clayton State (13-3, 7-2) currently having the inside track on the top seed for the conference tournament (The Lady Saints are ineligible for postseason play due to their first-year provisional status at the NCAA Division II level), this game will have implications as far as who could be seeded second. Both teams came off tough losses Monday, as the Lady Spartans lost a heartbeaker to visiting Columbus State 56-53, while the Patriots fell to the North Georgia women 69-58.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Armstrong Atlantic State (13-3, 7-2) at Clayton State (13-3, 6-3)--Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST
GC&SU (11-4, 8-1) at Columbus State (13-4, 7-1)--Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST

It's "Showdown Wednesday" in the Peach Belt Conference, as four of the league's top five teams square off in a pair of key conference showdowns. The Pirates saw a nine-game winning streak snapped with a 64-58 upset loss to Augusta State at home Monday night. Head Coach Jeff Burkhamer and his charges must re-group quickly, and hit the road to face a Lakers team that held off a scrappy Lander squad on the road, 64-61.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats took advantage of AASU's misfortune with a 77-63 victory over USC Aiken. That victory gave the GC&SU men sole possession of first place in the PBC, at least for now. That's because the Bobcats must travel to Columbus, Ga. to face a Cougars squad that has won seven straight games, the latest a 94-89 triumph at USC Upstate Monday night. The win was the 500th career coaching victory for veteran CSU head coach Herbert Greene, who also earned 400th career win at Upstate, which was then USC Spartanburg.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Columbus State (12-4, 6-1) at USC Upstate (11-3, 6-2)--Monday 7:30 p.m. EST

With current Peach Belt Conference co-leaders Armstrong Atlantic State and Georgia College & State University both in action the same night, this game could be critical for both the Cougars and the Spartans, as the winner could either be tied for second place, a two or three way tie for first place, or have first place altogether when all is said and done. Of course, that depends upon the outcome of the AASU-Augusta State game in Savannah, as well as the GC&SU-Lander contest in Milledgeville, Ga. Oh, and head coach Herbert Greene can get his 500th coaching win with a victory, at the same place where he got his 400th overall win.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Francis Marion (7-6, 5-2) at Clayton State (11-3, 5-2)--Saturday 2 p.m. EST

Since gaining a top 25 national ranking for the first time in school history, the Lakers have lost back-to-back games, the most recent a 79-65 defeat to upstart North Georgia on Wednesday. Now the Clayton State women must face a Francis Marion squad that has won four straight games, including a narrow 57-56 win over Augusta State on Wednesday. The winner of this contest not only could take over sole possession of second place in the Peach Belt Conference standings, but also could have the inside track on the top seed for the PBC tournament. Remember, North Georgia cannot compete in the PBC tourney despite its perfect record in conference play (12-3, 8-0 as of 01/20/2006).

TOP MEN'S GAME

West Georgia (12-4, 2-2) at #13 Alabama-Huntsville (L)--(14-2, 3-1)--Saturday 7:30 p.m. CST

The Braves begin the second leg of their Alabama road swing in the Tennessee Valley this weekend, as they face the Chargers. Hopefully, the second part of the trip will be much better than the first, as the West Georgia men fell at nationally top-ranked Montevallo 68-64 last Saturday, followed by a 102-81 shredding by West Alabama two nights later.

TOP WOMEN'S GAMES

Fort Valley State (13-1, 7-0) at Paine (10-3, 7-0)--Thursday 5:30 p.m. EST
#15 Delta State (14-1, 3-1) at Central Arkansas (12-4, 4-1)--Thursday 6 p.m. CST

Two SIAC squads will place their perfect conference marks on the line, as the Lady Lions host the Lady Wildcats, while the Sugar Bears entertain the Lady Statesmen in a crucial Gulf South Conference West Division grudge match. Both games will have serious implications not only on the races in these respective conferences, but in the South Region as well.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Albany State (6-4, 6-1) at Benedict (8-3, 8-0)--Thursday 8 p.m. EST
#14 Delta State (13-1, 4-0) at Central Arkansas (11-4, 4-1)--Thursday 9 p.m. EST

First place in the GSC West will be at stake when the Bears play host to the nationally-ranked Statesmen. Meanwhile, just several states away in South Carolina, the Tigers host the Golden Rams in a key SIAC showdown. All eight of Benedict's wins have come in SIAC action, as have all six of Albany State's wins. Still, something has to give when these two teams get together.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

North Georgia (11-3, 7-0) at Clayton State (11-2, 5-1)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST

With their nine-game winning streak snapped due to their upset loss at home to UNC Pembroke Saturday, the Lakers must re-group and face a Lady Saints team that has yet to lose a Peach Belt Conference game in the program's first year in the league. It's too bad the North Georgia women can't play in the conference tournament, for the same aforementioned reason above. Still, first place in the PBC will be on the line come mid-week in the Southern Crescent of Metro Atlanta.

TOP MEN'S GAME

USC Upstate (10-2, 5-1) at Armstrong Atlantic State (11-2, 5-1)--Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST

Things are getting tight in the Peach Belt Conference, as the Pirates host the Spartans in a battle of two teams locked in a three-way tie for second place (Columbus State is the third team in that log jam, but has the night off). The win streak for one win of these teams will end when once the game ends, as AASU has won seven straight games, while Upstate has four in a row.

TOP WOMEN'S GAMES

Alabama-Huntsville (7-7, 2-1) at #22 Valdosta State (11-4, 2-1)--Monday 6 p.m. EST

West Georgia (9-7, 2-1) at West Alabama (7-8, 2-1)--Monday 5:30 p.m. CST

The Lady Tigers host the Braves in a battle of two teams locked in a four-way logjam for second place in the Gulf South Conference East Division, at 2-1 in conference play. But wait! There's more! The nationally 22nd ranked Lady Blazers host the Lady Chargers in another game that could either break the tie, or create more chaos in the GSC East.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Lincoln Memorial (5-10, 3-0) at #1 Montevallo (15-1, 3-0)--Monday 7:30 p.m. CST

#13 Alabama-Huntsville (13-2, 3-1) at Valdosta State (10-5, 2-2)--Monday 8 p.m. EST

A lot of people look at the overall record for the Railsplitters and think, "this team should be 0-3 in conference play right now, instead of 3-0." Nor should such a team be tied for first place heading into a huge game against the nation's top-ranked teams in the Falcons. But that's exactly the situation the LMU men find themselves in after knocking off Valdosta State, West Florida, and West Alabama in succession to open GSC action. On the other hand, one of the teams the Railsplitters defeated en route to the unlikely fast start, VSU, finds itself in a tough challenge against a ranked opponent in UAH, even after holding off perennial arch-rival North Alabama 79-74 Saturday night. That win snapped a three-game skid for the Blazers, which included a loss to NCAA Division I UAB.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME:

UNC Pembroke (9-4, 4-2) at #23 Clayton State (11-1, 5-0)--Saturday 2 p.m. EST

The Lakers play host to the Lady Braves in a Saturday afternoon Peach Belt Conference matinee. Clayton State has won nine straight games, while UNCP reeled off three straight wins. It's too bad that something will have to give in this game.

West Georgia (12-2, 2-0) at #1 Montevallo (14-1, 2-0)--Saturday 7:30 p.m. CST

Just after holding off a then 20th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville squad in a 59-55 thriller on the road Monday night, the top-ranked Falcons must quickly re-group, and face a Braves team that has won nine games in a row. The winner of this contest will take over sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference East Division.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

#8 Henderson State (13-1, 3-0) at Central Arkansas (11-3, 3-0)--Thursday 6 p.m. CST

The Sugar Bears host the Lady Reddies in a battle for first place in the Gulf South Conference West Division. Both teams came off close wins Monday night, as HSU needed overtime to beat Southern Arkansas 71-66, while UCA edged Arkansas Tech 63-62.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Kentucky State (4-4, 3-2) at Albany State (4-4, 4-1)--Thursday 8 p.m. EST

The Golden Rams play host to the Thorobreds in a key SIAC match-up in Southwest Georgia. Kenutcky State has won three of its last four games, as the Thorobreds downed Fort Valley State on the road 64-58 Tuesday night. On the other hand, the ASU men didn't fare well in their home debut Tuesday, as the Golden Rams lost to defending SIAC tournament champion Lane, who beat Albany State in last year's SIAC tournament final, 74-59.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Columbus State (9-5, 2-2) at North Georgia (9-3, 5-0)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST

The Lady Saints play host to the Lady Cougars in a critical Peach Belt Conference match-up in Dahlonega, Ga. With Clayton State and North Georgia both tied currently for first place in the PBC at 5-0, and every other team having at least two conference losses, this game is crucial for the CSU women if they hope to get the second seed for the PBC tournament in March (Remember, North Georgia is ineligible for the conference tournament, since the school itself is in its first season as an NCAA Division II member). The Lady Cougars currently trail UNC Pembroke (8-4, 3-2) by half-a-game for third place overall in the PBC regular season standings.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Georgia College & State University (8-3, 5-0) at USC Upstate (8-2, 3-1)--Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST

The Bobcats will put their six-game winning streak on the line against the Spartans, who handed North Georgia its first-ever Peach Belt Conference loss Saturday, with the Saints picking an 89-72 win on the road. As for the GC&SU men, they had to hold on for a road win of their own last weekend, as they downed Francis Marion, 71-66.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Montevallo (5-9, 1-0) at Alabama-Huntsville (L)--(6-6, 1-0)--Monday 5:30 p.m. CST

At first glance, many people will look at the overall records and go, "Huh?" But, in a Gulf South Conference East Division that's down this season (Valdosta State and West Florida, both currently 10-3 overall, and 1-0 in the GSC East as this preview is being written, are the only teams with overall winning records as of Sunday), both the Lady Falcons and Lady Chargers still managed to gain at least a share of first place in the division after winning their respective GSC openers Saturday night. The Montevallo women got by North Alabama on the road 69-65, while Alabama-Huntsville defeated West Alabama 72-62.

#2 Montevallo (13-1, 1-0) at #20 Alabama-Huntsville (12-1, 1-0)--Monday 7:30 p.m. CST

The Chargers host the Falcons in this huge early season GSC East clash. While UAH cruised to an easy 91-67 win over West Alabama Saturday night, Montevallo had to hold on to beat North Alabama on the road, 75-72. Both teams losses so far this season came against unranked squads, as the Falcons lost to Stillman, while the Chargers fell against Harding. It's a shame that one of these teams will be pinned with its second loss of the season when the smoke clears.

The Lady Braves host the Lady Pirates in a battle of two middle-of-the-pack squads in the Peach Belt Conference. The UNCP women proved that they will at least have a say in who wins the PBC regular season title in 2006, as the Lady Braves snapped a three-game skid with a 64-53 road win at Georgia College & State University Wednesday. As for the Lady Pirates, they opened the new calendar year by extending their winning streak to five games, downing Francis Marion 64-47.

While DSU leads the all-time series 17-10, the HSU women's program has steadily become a national player, which should make for an exciting game.
