NCAA DIVISION II BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW--PART THREE

NOTE: Our outlook on the 2005 NCAA Division II basketball tournament with a preview of the South region men's bracket. Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are listed in BOLD type.

SOUTH REGION--MEN--at Montevallo, Ala.

Lynn (25-5) vs. Lane (16-14)

The Knights take on the Dragons in this match-up of automatic qualifiers. Lynn advanced to the NCAA tournament by winning the Sunshine State Conference title, while the Dragons came into the SIAC tournament seeded seventh, yet won four straight games to win that league's automatic bid.

Central Arkansas (22-7) vs. West Georgia (23-6)

The Bears battle the Braves in a battle of Gulf South Conference squads. Both teams reached the semifinals of last weekend's GSC tournament before being eliminated: UCA by eventual champion Montevallo, and West Georgia by Delta State, respectively. Now the two teams will vie for the right to face the winner of the Lynn-Lane contest.

Florida Gulf Coast (24-6) vs. Eckerd (20-10)

In its first year of NCAA Division II eligibility, the Eagles are making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. FGCU will face a Tritons that's no stranger to postseason play, as Eckerd won the Sunshine State Conference tournament last year, and reached the finals of this year's tournament before losing to Lynn.

Barry (23-8) vs. Montevallo (24-6)

The Buccaneers earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament despite losing in the quarterfinals of the SSC tournament to Tampa, 56-54, last week. Meanwhile, the Falcons not only won their second straight Gulf South Conference tournament title by beating Delta State, 72-60, they also earned the right to host the South regional. Anyway you look at it, this should be one of the best early round match-ups of the NCAA tournament.
