Day one of the 2005 Peach Belt Conference basketball tournament in Augusta, Ga. has ended , and two of the three lower seeds have emerged victorious. The biggest shocker of the day came in Tuesday's first game, as the North Division's sixth seed, Lander (13-14) upset the South Division's third seed, Georgia College & State University (18-10), 72-59. The Bearcats will play PBC North second seed USC Aiken Thursday at 1 p.m. EST
In other games, the University of North Florida Lady Ospreys, who entered the PBC tourney as the fifth seed in the South Division, held off a late rally by USC Upstate to win 59-57. UNF (13-15) will face PBC regular season champion Clayton State (21-6) Thursday at 3 p.m. EST.
In the last game of the night, Kennesaw State (17-11) was the lone higher seeded team to advance to the quarterfinals, as the South Division fourth seeded Lady Owls rallied from a double digit deficit in the second half to edge Francis Marion (11-17) 70-69. KSU will face PBC North Division champion UNC Pembroke (18-9) at 6 p.m. EST Thursday. Columbus State (19-8) and Augusta State (14-13) round out the Thursday night quarterfinal action in the Peach Belt Conference women's tourney at 8 p.m. EST.
