Lynn (27-5) vs. Montevallo (26-6)

It's one versus two for the right to represent the South Region in the Elite Eight, as the two-time Gulf South Conference champion Falcons face the Fighting Knights in the title game Tuesday. Both teams held on for hard-fought wins in Sunday's regional semifinals, as Lynn eliminated Central Arkansas 73-69, while Montevallo downed Eckerd 65-62. The Falcons hope to put a stop to the Fighting Knights 10-game winning streak, and advance to their first-ever Elite Eight in only their second trip to the NCAA tournament.

If you can't make the trip to UM, you can listen online at http://www.montevallo.edu/athletics starting at 7 p.m. CST.

BRIEFLY:

Columbus State saw its hopes for an upset fall by the wayside, as the Cougars fell to top-ranked Bowie State 84-72. The loss ended the Cougars season at 23-9. Meanwhile, in the other South Atlantic men's regional semifinal, Virginia Union ensured that no Peach Belt Conference team would advance to the regional, as the Panthers ousted USC Upstate 85-70. The Spartans ended their season with a 24-8 record.

In the women's South regional final at Conway, Ark., top seed and host Central Arkansas denied Henderson State a return trip to the Elite Eight, as the Sugar Bears downed the Lady Reddies 76-61. The win extended UCA's winning streak to 18 games, while winning 24 of its 25 contests.

Finally, in case you missed it, Kennesaw State men's basketball team's quest for a repeat national championship at the NCAA Division II level ended at the hands of Columbus State on Saturday with an 83-78 overtime loss. That loss not only ended the Fighting Owls season at 24-6, but also brought an end to KSU's tenure as a Division II school. MUST SEE GAMES--03/12-13/2005

NOTE: With basketball season over for most schools, baseball is already in full swing. For the remainder of the 2005 season, D-II South Sports will spotlight some of the key conference match-ups on the diamond. So, sit back and enjoy reading!

The Peach Belt Conference has the toughest baseball competition in all of NCAA Division II. With six teams (#7 Lander, #8 Kennesaw State, #12 North Florida, #21 UNC Pembroke, #25 Augusta State, and #28 Francis Marion) currently ranked in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30, and at least four other teams (Columbus State, GC&SU, USC Aiken, and USC Upstate) receiving votes, this season promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. Here's a look at some of the key series in the PBC this weekend.

Kennesaw State (14-6, 6-3) at North Florida (14-7, 2-4)

The Fighting Owls face the Ospreys in the last regular season series ever between the two schools as Peach Belt Conference members, as both schools will head to the Atlantic Sun Conference and the NCAA Division I level after this season. Ironically, KSU enters the three-game set tied with Lander for first place in the PBC, while UNF sits in sole possession of last place despite the lofty national ranking. The Ospreys recently went 6-1 in their own Kennel Club Classic, all against their future D-I foes, with the lone loss coming Friday against Ohio State.

UNC Pembroke (18-7, 5-4) at Francis Marion (15-6-1, 5-6-1)

The upstart Braves make the short trip down Interstate 95 to Florence, S.C. to face the Patriots in another battle of top 30 teams, as UNCP is ranked 21st, while FMU is ranked 28th. The Braves trail Kennesaw State and Lander by one full game heading into the series.

Augusta State (16-7-1, 4-4-1) at Armstrong Atlantic State (16-1, 0-0)

The Jaguars battle the Pirates in this battle of Georgia schools. Apparently, no one is paying attention to AASU and its fast start, as the Pirates are the only team in the PBC not to receive any votes in the Collegiate Baseball rankings. However, Head Coach Joe Roberts and his charges hope to send a message to the pollsters, as well as the rest of the conference this weekend.

NCAA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT UPDATE

NOTE: Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are marked in BOLD type.

The Clayton College & State University women's basketball team made good in its first-ever NCAA tournament game, as the second seeded Lakers defeated seventh seeded Newberry 79-54 in the first round of the South Atlantic regional Friday at Raleigh, N.C. The Lakers (25-6) will face Carson-Newman in Saturday's regional semifinal. The Lady Eagles defeated Fayetteville State 79-67.

The news was not as good for the other Peach Belt Conference teams in the NCAA tournament, however, as eighth seeded USC Aiken (19-13) saw its season end with a 77-48 loss to top seeded Shaw, while fourth seeded Columbus State (20-11) fell to fifth seeded Wingate (21-10) 82-71.

In the South regionals at Conway, Ark., top seeded Central Arkansas (25-6) rolled past eighth seeded Rollins 88-58, fifth seeded Fort Valley State (22-9) crushed fourth seeded Tuskegee (19-11) 77-53, third seeded Henderson State (24-9) got by sixth seeded Paine (18-12) 80-72, and second seeded Valdosta State defeated seventh seeded Florida Tech (21-10) 67-49.

Valdosta State (24-6) vs. Henderson State (24-9)

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGIONAL--at Raleigh, N.C.

Clayton State (25-6) vs. Carson-Newman (24-7)

NCAA DIVISION II BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW--PART FOUR

NOTE: This is the final installment of a four part series previewing the NCAA Division II basketball tournament, with the women's regionals starting Friday, followed by the men on Saturday. Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are marked in BOLD type.

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGIONAL--MEN--at Bowie, Md.

Bowie State (24-4) vs. Tusculum (18-10)

The Bulldogs earned the top seed and host role for the South Atlantic regional despite being upset in the quarterfinal round of the CIAA tournament by eventual runner-up Fayetteville State. On the other hand, the Pioneers earned their first-ever NCAA tournament berth by pulling off two upsets: one over top seed Catawba in the semifinals, and another over second seeded Lenoir-Rhyne to win the South Atlantic Conference tournament.

Columbus State (22-8) vs. Kennesaw State (24-5)

When the Cougars faced the defending national champion Fighting Owls in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference tournament last weekend, Yandel Brown exploded for a game-high 30 points, as CSU routed KSU 90-68. Now the two teams will play each other again, likely for the final time, as Kennesaw State makes the move to the NCAA Division I ranks after this season. This contest could go down as one of the best games in NCAA Division II tournament history.

USC Upstate (23-7) vs. Winston-Salem State (22-7)

The Spartans also fell to this aforementioned Columbus State squad in last Sunday's PBC tournament title game, as the regular season co-champions fell to the Cougars 93-81. Now USC Upstate must try to bounce back against the CIAA Rams, who, like Kennesaw State, are also planning a move to the NCAA Division II level for 2005-06.

Catawba (23-6) vs. Virginia Union (24-4)

The Indians take on the Panthers in this CIAA vs. SAC match-up. After making a surprise run to the SAC tournament championship last season, the Indians won this season's SAC regular season title, only to fall to Tusculum in the semifinals of this year's tournament. Meanwhile, VUU won an unprecedented 16th CIAA tournament tile by defeating Fayetteville State in the title game last Saturday.

NOTE: Our outlook on the 2005 NCAA Division II basketball tournament with a preview of the South region men's bracket. Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are listed in BOLD type.

SOUTH REGION--MEN--at Montevallo, Ala.

Lynn (25-5) vs. Lane (16-14)

The Knights take on the Dragons in this match-up of automatic qualifiers. Lynn advanced to the NCAA tournament by winning the Sunshine State Conference title, while the Dragons came into the SIAC tournament seeded seventh, yet won four straight games to win that league's automatic bid.

Central Arkansas (22-7) vs. West Georgia (23-6)

The Bears battle the Braves in a battle of Gulf South Conference squads. Both teams reached the semifinals of last weekend's GSC tournament before being eliminated: UCA by eventual champion Montevallo, and West Georgia by Delta State, respectively. Now the two teams will vie for the right to face the winner of the Lynn-Lane contest.

Florida Gulf Coast (24-6) vs. Eckerd (20-10)

In its first year of NCAA Division II eligibility, the Eagles are making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. FGCU will face a Tritons that's no stranger to postseason play, as Eckerd won the Sunshine State Conference tournament last year, and reached the finals of this year's tournament before losing to Lynn.

Barry (23-8) vs. Montevallo (24-6)

The Buccaneers earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament despite losing in the quarterfinals of the SSC tournament to Tampa, 56-54, last week. Meanwhile, the Falcons not only won their second straight Gulf South Conference tournament title by beating Delta State, 72-60, they also earned the right to host the South regional. Anyway you look at it, this should be one of the best early round match-ups of the NCAA tournament.

NOTE: Our NCAA Division II basketball tournament outlook continues with the women's bracket in the South Atlantic region. Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are listed in BOLD type.

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION--WOMEN--at Raleigh, N.C.

Shaw (29-1) vs. USC Aiken (19-12)

The Lady Bears hope the third time will be the charm, as they hold the top seed in the South Atlantic regional for the third year in a row. The last two years, a Peach Belt Conference team has eliminated Shaw from postseason play: Augusta State in 2004, and North Florida in 2003, both eventual Elite Eight participants. As for USCA, the Lady Pacers will make their second appearance in the NCAA tournament, their first since 2002.

Columbus State (20-10) vs. Wingate (20-10)

The Lady Cougars return to the NCAA tournament after a one year absence last season. CSU will face a Wingate team that fell to Carson-Newman in the finals of the South Atlantic Conference tournament.

The Lady Eagles take on the Lady Broncos in the 3-6 match-up. C-N earned the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning the SAC tournament title. On the other hand, Fayetteville earned its way to an at-large bid despite losing in the quarterfinals of the CIAA tournament to Winston-Salem State.

Newberry (18-11) vs. Clayton State (24-6)

The Lakers face the the Lady Indians in a battle of first-time participants in the NCAA tournament. Clayton State swept the regular season and tournament titles in the Peach Belt Conference, while Newberry earned its initial trip to postseason after finishing fifth in the SAC at the end of the regular season.

Tuskegee (19-10) vs. Fort Valley State (21-9)

The Tigerettes face the Wildcats in a battle of SIAC teams. Tuskegee edged out FVSU to win the regular season title, but only one of these squads will advance to round two.

Henderson State (23-9) vs. Paine (18-11)

The Reddies battle the Lions in the 3-6 game Friday. HSU hopes to return to the Elite Eight after making a Cinderella run last season, but won't be sneaking up on anyone this season. On the other hand, Paine enters the NCAA tournament after winning the SIAC tournament.

Florida Tech (21-9) vs. Valdosta State (23-6)

The 2-7 contest features two teams that earned at-large bids after losing in the finals of their respective conference tournaments: Florida Tech in the SSC, VSU in the GSC. The Lady Blazers will make their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1997.

SIAC (1): Only the winner of the SIAC tournament in Albany, Ga. will be invited to the NCAA tournament. Albany State, Benedict, and Paine are favored to get that one bid.

Sunshine State/Independents (3): Lynn and Florida Gulf Coast, ranked first and second respectively in this week's South region poll, should get bids regardless of what happens this weekend. Ninth ranked Barry may need to win SSC tournament to earn a ticket to the NCAA tourney.

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION

3. Kennesaw State

4. Virginia Union

5. Winston-Salem State

6. Columbus State

CIAA (3): This always competitive conference could get as many as four bids to the NCAA tournament, with Bowie State, Virginia Union, and Winston-Salem State being definite locks.

PEACH BELT (4): Regular season co-champs Kennesaw State and USC Upstate appear to be NCAA bound regardless of the eventual outcome of the PBC tournament, as is Columbus State. The winner of the Augusta State-Clayton State game in Friday night's quarterfinals could decide if the PBC gets a fourth bid.

South Atlantic (1): Catawba is the serious favorite to win the SAC tournament. If a second team wants to join the Indians at the dance, they'll need to win the conference tournament. That means somebody would have to upset Catawba eventually.

4. Columbus State

5. Fayetteville State

6. Wingate

7. USC Aiken
