NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW--PART 1

NOTE: This is the first of four installments leading up to the start of the NCAA Division II tournament. First up is a look at the women's South Region bracket.

Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are marked in BOLD type.

SOUTH REGION--at Arkadelphia, Ark.--Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

#1 Delta State (28-2) vs. #8 Tampa (24-6)

Fresh off their Gulf South Conference tournament title game win over Henderson State last weekend, the Lady Statesmen face the upstart Spartans, who upset previously unbeaten Rollins to win the Sunshine State Conference tournament. Tampa had been flying under the radar prior to the surprise win over the Lady Tars, therefore, this is a squad that DSU shouldn't take lightly.

#4 Rollins (28-1) vs. #5 Florida Gulf Coast (28-1)

This is perhaps the best of the four first-round match-ups, as the Lady Eagles make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament as a D-II member. On the other hand, the Tars are no strangers to postseason play, as they will make their seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the last eight years, and their ninth overall. It's too bad only one of these teams will move on to the second round.

#3 Fort Valley State (28-2) vs. #6 West Florida (22-6)

The Lady Wildcats were hardly challenged during the SIAC regular season, but fell 73-68 to Paine in last Sunday's SIAC tournament final at Birmingham, Ala. Now FVSU must quickly regroup, and face a UWF squad that won the Gulf South Conference East Division title, and is making its first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1999.

#7 Paine (22-8) at #2 Henderson State (26-4)

The Lady Reddies hope to bounce back from last Sunday's GSC title game loss to Delta State to battle the Lady Lions, who earned the SIAC's automatic bid by shocking Fort Valley State.
