ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO UPSETS DELTA STATE

There's a good reason why it's called "March Madness", as the nationally top-ranked Delta State University men's basketball team couldn't hold on to a 30-25 halftime lead, and had their season come to an abrupt end at 30-2 with a 83-68 upset loss to Arkansas-Monticello in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Regional Sunday. The Boll Weevils will face Montevallo, who downed Rollins in the other regional semifinal contest, 81-68.

Overall, it turned out to be a rough weekend for DSU basketball, as the Lady Statesmen advanced to the finals of the women's South Regional bracket, Monday night, but lost for the third time in four games to Henderson State, 44-40. HSU will face the West Regional champion in the Women's NCAA Division II Elite Eight at Hot Springs, Ark. March 22.

In other NCAA tournament action involving D-II South Nation squads, the Bobcats of Georgia College & State University will face defending D-II national champion Virginia Union in the South Atlantic Regional final Tuesday night. The Panthers (27-3) rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to eliminate Columbus State 75-69 Sunday night. The Bobcats crushed Presbyterian 77-58 to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000.
