MONTEVALLO MEN, HENDERSON STATE LOSE IN ELITE EIGHT

D-II South Nation's hopes for bringing home an NCAA Division II national championship in basketball fell by the wayside Wednesday, as both the Montevallo men and Henderson State women were eliminated in the opening round of their respective Elite Eight brackets. The Falcons fell to Seattle Pacific 79-65 in Springfield, Mass. while Henderson State blew a big lead against Cal State Chico, and lost 67-66 at Hot Springs, Ark.

NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT RECAP

Just over a decade ago, the University of Montevallo (Ala.) Falcons were a fledgling NAIA program trying to adjust to the NCAA Division II ranks. Now the UM men are in the Elite Eight for the first time in school history, as they held off Arkansas-Monticello 89-86 to win the South Regional title Tuesday night in Cleveland, Miss. The Falcons will face West Regional champion Seattle Pacific in the national quarterfinals in Springfield, Mass. Wed. March 22.

While UM was celebrating its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, the Georgia College & State University squad's quest to advance to the national quarterfinals for just the second time ever fell short Tuesday, as the Bobcats lost to defending national champion Virginia Union 76-73.

Finally, Henderson State downed Delta State for the third time in four games to advance to the Women's NCAA Division II Elite Eight at Hot Springs, Ark. Wed. March 22. The Lady Reddies (29-4) will face West Regional champion Cal State Chico in the national quarterfinals.

ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO UPSETS DELTA STATE

There's a good reason why it's called "March Madness", as the nationally top-ranked Delta State University men's basketball team couldn't hold on to a 30-25 halftime lead, and had their season come to an abrupt end at 30-2 with a 83-68 upset loss to Arkansas-Monticello in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Regional Sunday. The Boll Weevils will face Montevallo, who downed Rollins in the other regional semifinal contest, 81-68.

Overall, it turned out to be a rough weekend for DSU basketball, as the Lady Statesmen advanced to the finals of the women's South Regional bracket, Monday night, but lost for the third time in four games to Henderson State, 44-40. HSU will face the West Regional champion in the Women's NCAA Division II Elite Eight at Hot Springs, Ark. March 22.

In other NCAA tournament action involving D-II South Nation squads, the Bobcats of Georgia College & State University will face defending D-II national champion Virginia Union in the South Atlantic Regional final Tuesday night. The Panthers (27-3) rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to eliminate Columbus State 75-69 Sunday night. The Bobcats crushed Presbyterian 77-58 to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000.

NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT--PART 4

NOTE: This is the fourth and final installment in a series of previews leading up to the NCAA Division II basketball tournament. This time we'll preview the South Atlantic Region men's bracket.

Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports marked in BOLD type.

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION--at Richmond, Va.--Saturday, Sunday, & Tuesday

#8 Wingate (18-12) at #1 Virginia Union (25-3)

The defending NCAA Division II national champion Panthers begin their quest towards a possible repeat against the upstart Bulldogs, who won the South Atlantic Conference tournament title. It will be interesting to see if VUU can return to the form that gave the program its third national championship in school history last year.

#4 Columbus State (22-8) vs. #5 USC Upstate (20-9)

The Cougars and the Spartans will meet for the third time this season, with CSU winning both regular season meetings. However, the Spartans are peaking at the right time, as they won three straight games to win the Peach Belt Conference tournament last weekend, despite losing five games in a row at one point during the regular season.

#3 Johnson C. Smith (23-7) vs. #6 GC&SU (20-8)

Just two years ago, the Bobcats program hit rock bottom, finishing a dismal 7-22 in 2003-04. But within that same span, GC&SU underwent a 13-game improvement to win a share of the PBC regular-season title with Columbus State. Now head coach Terry Sellers and his charges face their toughest challenge yet, as they battle the Golden Bulls.

#2 Armstrong Atlantic State (23-7) vs. #7 Presbyterian (24-9)

After another 20-win season under head coach Jeff Burkhamer, the Pirates will face the Blue Hose in a battle of at-large teams. AASU was stomped by USC Upstate 73-49 in the PBC tournament title game last Sunday, while the Blue Hose fell to Wingate in the SAC tournament championship game.

NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW--PART 3

NOTE: This is the third of a four-part series of previews leading up to the NCAA Division II basketball tournament. In this installment, D-II South Sports has an outlook on the men's South Region bracket.

Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are marked in BOLD type.

SOUTH REGION MEN--at Cleveland, Miss.--Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday

#8 Stillman (21-9) at #1 Delta State (29-1)

The nationally top-ranked Statesmen play host to the Tigers in the 1-8 match-up. Stillman surprised the experts by winning their first-ever SIAC tournament title in their inaugural season in that league. The Tigers are no strangers to playing against the giants, though, as they upset a then top-ranked Montevallo team earlier in the season.

#4 Arkansas-Monticello (19-10) vs. #5 North Alabama (18-10)

More than a week after routing the Lions 81-62 in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference tournament, the Boll Weevils must turn around and face them again in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament. Only this time the loser of this contest will see their season come to an end. Basically, look for an intense, close game from wire-to-wire.

#3 Alabama-Huntsville (22-7) vs. #6 Rollins (23-7)

The Chargers do battle against the Tars in what probably could be the best game of the first-round so far. Rollins needed overtime to edge a scrappy Barry squad 57-56 for the Sunshine State Confernce tournament title, while UAH advanced to the semifinals of last weekend's GSC tournament before losing to Delta State.

#2 Montevallo (26-4) vs. #7 Benedict (20-6)

The Falcons face another pack of Tigers in a battle of regular-season champions; UM from the GSC East, and Benedict from the SIAC. The Tigers still managed to earn at-large bid to the NCAA tournament despite being upset by ninth-seeded Miles in the SIAC tournament.

NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW--PART 2

NOTE: Our second installment of previews leading up to the NCAA Division II basketball tournament takes a look inside the women's South Atlantic Region bracket.

Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are listed in BOLD type.

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION--at Raleigh, N.C.--Friday, Saturday, and Monday

#8 Newberry (18-12) at # 1 Shaw (26-4)

The Lady Bears host the Lady Indians in a battle of conference tournament champions. Shaw won the CIAA tournament, while Newberry earned its first-ever South Atlantic Conference tournament title as the fifth seed.

#4 North Carolina Central (22-6) vs. #5 Georgia College & State University (17-13)

The Lady Bobcats overcame an up-and-down performance during the regular season to win the Peach Belt Conference tournament, which included an upset win over top seeded Clayton State last Saturday, followed by a dramatic overtime win over Francis Marion 89-83 in the title game a day later. Those wins catapulted the Lady Bobcats to their third NCAA tournament appearance in the last five years. Now GC&SU faces a North Carolina Central squad that earned its way to the South Atlantic Regional by way of an at-large bid.

#3 Clayton State (24-5) vs. #6 Johnson C. Smith (20-10)

After being knocked off by GC&SU in the semifinals of last weekend's Peach Belt Conference tournament, the Lakers will get another chance to redeem themselves this weekend, as they face the Golden Bulls. It'll be interesting to see how Clayton State responds after a disappointing performance.

#7 USC Upstate (16-13) vs. #2 Wingate (23-6)

Despite having the worst winning percentage (.552) of all eight teams in the South Atlantic Region, the Spartans did manage to earn their way into the NCAA tournament under first-year head coach Tammy George. Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Yakeeshia Ross will try to lead Upstate to a potential upset win over the South Atlantic Conference regular season champion Bulldogs.

NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW--PART 1

NOTE: This is the first of four installments leading up to the start of the NCAA Division II tournament. First up is a look at the women's South Region bracket.

Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are marked in BOLD type.

SOUTH REGION--at Arkadelphia, Ark.--Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

#1 Delta State (28-2) vs. #8 Tampa (24-6)

Fresh off their Gulf South Conference tournament title game win over Henderson State last weekend, the Lady Statesmen face the upstart Spartans, who upset previously unbeaten Rollins to win the Sunshine State Conference tournament. Tampa had been flying under the radar prior to the surprise win over the Lady Tars, therefore, this is a squad that DSU shouldn't take lightly.

#4 Rollins (28-1) vs. #5 Florida Gulf Coast (28-1)

This is perhaps the best of the four first-round match-ups, as the Lady Eagles make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament as a D-II member. On the other hand, the Tars are no strangers to postseason play, as they will make their seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the last eight years, and their ninth overall. It's too bad only one of these teams will move on to the second round.

#3 Fort Valley State (28-2) vs. #6 West Florida (22-6)

The Lady Wildcats were hardly challenged during the SIAC regular season, but fell 73-68 to Paine in last Sunday's SIAC tournament final at Birmingham, Ala. Now FVSU must quickly regroup, and face a UWF squad that won the Gulf South Conference East Division title, and is making its first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1999.

#7 Paine (22-8) at #2 Henderson State (26-4)

The Lady Reddies hope to bounce back from last Sunday's GSC title game loss to Delta State to battle the Lady Lions, who earned the SIAC's automatic bid by shocking Fort Valley State.

CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Henderson State (26-3) vs. Delta State (27-2)--Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship Game at Tupelo, Miss.--Noon CST

The Lady Reddies and Lady Statesmen will meet for the third time this season, only this time the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II tournament will be at stake. However, both squads needed overtime to get to the GSC title game, as HSU got by West Georgia 73-70, while DSU downed West Georgia 63-54. The Lady Statesmen hope the third time will be the charm against the Lady Reddies, as DSU lost both regular season meetings to HSU.

TOP MEN'S GAME

NOTE: National rankings courtesy of NABC/Division II Bulletin poll.

#1 Delta State (28-1) vs. #4 Montevallo (26-3)--Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship Game at Tupelo, Miss.--2:30 p.m. CST

It's the Statesmen against the Falcons in a re-match of last year's title game. The nationally top-ranked Statesmen were pushed to the limit by #21 Alabama-Huntsville before pulling out a 74-72 win in Saturday's first semifinal game, while UM downed Arkansas-Monticello in the other semifinal contest. The Falcons hope to win their third straight GSC tournament title, a feat that's not so bad for a program that entered the NCAA Division II ranks more than a decade ago, while the Statesmen hope to gain some momentum heading into the NCAA tournament.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Georgia College & State University (20-7) vs. Armstrong Atlantic State (22-6)--Peach Belt Conference Men's Tournament Semifinals at Greeenwood, S.C.--Saturday 6 p.m. EST

The second-seeded Bobcats battle the third-seeded Pirates with a trip to Sunday's PBC tournament title game on the line. GC&SU reached the semis with a 78-65 win over UNC Pembroke, while AASU downed Augusta State 76-69, both on Friday. The winner of this contest faces the winner of the Lander-USC Upstate game (see story of Lander's upset win over top-seeded Columbus State below).

Delta State (27-1) vs. Alabama-Huntsville (22-6)--Gulf South Conference Men's Tournament Semifinals at Tupelo, Miss.--Saturday 5:30 p.m. CST

The nation's top-ranked Statesmen face the Chargers for the right to play for the GSC tournament title Sunday. DSU held off a scrappy Valdosta State squad to advance to this weekend's semifinals with a 74-70 win. Meanwhile, UAH held off Central Arkansas to win a 48-46 defensive struggle. The winner of the DSU-UAH game faces the winner of the Montevallo-Arkansas-Monticello contest. By the way, UM got by West Georgia 75-72, while UAM crushed North Alabama 81-62.

LANDER MEN UPSET COLUMBUS STATE

Perhaps the biggest upset in Peach Belt Conference tournament occurred Friday night in Greenwood, S.C., where #8 seed host and top seed Lander rallied from a 10-point deficit, and stunned top-seeded Columbus State 81-74. The Bearcats (9-20) will now face the fifth-seeded USC Upstate (18-9), who knocked off fourth-seeded Clayton State 68-67.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Clayton State (21-6) vs. USC Upstate (17-9)--Peach Belt Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at Greenwood, S.C.--5 p.m. EST

The fourth-seeded Spartans face the fifth-seeded Lakers in this PBC tournament with possible implications for an at-large NCAA tournament bid at stake. After winning a share of the PBC regular season title with former conference member Kennesaw State, and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament a year ago, USC Upstate finds itself in a must-win situation just to return to postseason play this season. As for the Lakers, they'll try to bounce back after being upset 88-81 by Francis Marion in the regular season finale. At least two wins could help seal the program's first-ever NCAA tournament berth.

North Alabama (18-9) at Arkansas-Monticello (18-9)--Gulf South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at Tupelo, Miss.--Friday 7:30 p.m. CST

The Lions battle the Boll Weevils in this battle of 18-win squads, with a spot in Saturday's semifinal round on the line. UNA enters the game as the #3 seed in the GSC East, while UAM comes as the #2 seed from the GSC West.

COUNTDOWN TO MARCH MADNESS

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Central Arkansas (17-10) vs. West Georgia (18-9)--Gulf South Conference Tournament--Thursday 2:45 p.m. CST--Tupelo, Miss.

The Gulf South Conference West Division's third seeded Sugar Bears face the East Division's second seeded Braves, with a trip to Saturday's GSC tournament semifinals on the line. The winner of this game likely will need to win out to have any shot at an NCAA tournament bid.
