COUNTDOWN TO MARCH MADNESS--MEN--WEEK OF 02/26/2005
SOUTH REGION
1. West Georgia
2. Lynn
3. Florida Gulf Coast
4. Montevallo
5. Arkansas-Monticello
6. Eckerd
7. Barry
8. Valdosta State
9. Harding
10. Central Arkansas
ANALYSIS: Projected number of bids for each conference are marked in parentheses.
GULF SOUTH (3): This league has always been one of the toughest conferences in all of Division II. But this season may have been one of the most competitive in recent seasons, as six teams (West Georgia, Montevallo, Arkansas-Monticello, Valdosta State, Harding, and Central Arkansas) are ranked in this week's South region poll. It's a shame that a few good teams might find themselves sitting at home come Selection Sunday.
SIAC (1): Once again, the SIAC was shut out of the regional poll this week, as Benedict and Morehouse, the two finalists in last year's conference tournament, have been the only teams regionally ranked this season. But it probably won't matter, since the SIAC will likely get only one bid, which will go to the winner of next week's SIAC tournament in Albany, Ga.
Sunshine State/Independents (4): Lynn, Eckerd, and Barry appear to be the likely candidates to represent the SSC in the NCAA's. Meanwhile, independent Florida Gulf Coast is 22-6, and could very well make its first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament in its first full season of eligibility. Not bad for a school that didn't open its doors until 1997.
SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION
1. Kennesaw State
2. Bowie State
3. USC Upstate
4. Virginia Union
5. Winston-Salem State
6. Columbus State
7. North Carolina Central
8. Catawba
9. Lander
10. Augusta State
CIAA (4): Bowie State maybe #1 in the nation, but the CIAA boasts several other strong teams such as Virginia Union, Winston-Salem State, and North Carolina Central.
PEACH BELT (3): Kennesaw State and USC Upstate have been the class of the league all season, with Columbus State also playing solid for much of the season, although Lander and Augusta State have made late charges to earn a spot in this week's regional poll. The PBC could get four or five bids, but that would depend upon the results from other conference tournaments.
South Atlantic (1): With 20-plus wins, and a regular season title, Catawba seems to be the favorite to win the South Atlantic Conference tournament.
MUST SEE GAMES--02/26/2005
TOP WOMEN'S GAMES:
West Florida (18-8, 10-3) at Valdosta State (20-5, 10-3)--Saturday 12 noon EST
The winner of this game will win the Gulf South Conference East Division title, while the loser will settle for the number two seed.
Georgia College & State University (18-8, 9-6) at Clayton State (20-6, 12-3)--Saturday 5:30 p.m. EST
The Lakers have already clinched a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular season title, but can have it all to themselves with a win, or a Columbus State upset loss to Armstrong Atlantic State.
Benedict (18-8, 12-5) at Paine (15-10, 13-4)--Saturday 5:30 p.m. EST
The Lions can clinch at least a share of the SIAC regular season title with a win over the Tigers, and a Tuskegee loss at Kentucky State.
Other significant games on the final day of the regular season include:
USC Upstate (14-12, 7-8) at UNC Pembroke (17-9, 9-6)--Saturday 2 p.m. EST
UNCP can clinch the Peach Belt Conference North Division title with a win.
Lincoln Memorial (13-13, 5-8) at West Georgia (16-9, 8-5)--Saturday 5:30 p.m. EST
Railspitters need a win and some help to reach the Gulf South Conference tournament.
Arkansas-Monticello (13-13, 7-8) at Ouachita Baptist (16-10, 8-7)--Saturday 6 p.m. CST
OBU can clinch third place in the GSC West with a win.
TOP MEN'S GAMES:
Arkansas-Monticello (18-8, 10-5) at Ouachita Baptist (17-9, 9-6)--Saturday 2 p.m. CST
The Boll Weevils can claim at least a share of the Gulf South Conference West Division title with a win, despite losing four games in a row. On the other hand, the Tigers could finish in a three way tie for third place in the division, depending upon the outcome of other games.
North Florida (14-15, 9-6) at Kennesaw State (22-4, 12-3)--Saturday 4 p.m. EST
Yes, the UNF men have an overall losing record, and can't win even a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular season title, much less win it outright. But this last-ever regular season meeting between the two teams as PBC members (both teams will move up to NCAA Division I in 2005-06) will be important in more ways than one, as the defending NCAA Division II national champion Fighting Owls must win to claim at least a share of the PBC crown. KSU lost a chance to win the regular season title outright, thanks to a 75-70 upset loss at Clayton State in double overtime Wednesday night. On the other hand, the Ospreys can finish the regular season with a .500 overall record should they pull off the upset, as the UNF men are already assured of a winning record in PBC play.
Henderson State (13-13, 8-7) at Harding (16-10, 9-6)--Saturday 8 p.m. CST
It's just that simple, really. The winner advances to the Gulf South Conference tournament, while the loser's season will come to an end.

COUNTDOWN TO MARCH MADNESS--WOMEN--WEEK ENDING 02/26/2005
NOTE: Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are listed in BOLD type.
SOUTH REGION:
1. Central Arkansas
2. Tuskegee
3. Henderson State
4. Valdosta State
5. Fort Valley State
6. Paine
7. West Georgia
8. West Florida
9. Florida Southern
10. Tampa
ANALYSIS: Here's a quick breakdown on each of the three South region conferences, with the projected number of bids in parentheses.
Gulf South (4): By far, this is the toughest of all of the conferences in the region, with Central Arkansas and Henderson State leading the way in the GSC West, while Valdosta State and West Florida will square off for the title in the GSC East this Saturday. A team that no one will want to play in next week's Gulf South Conference tournament is West Georgia, which has won six straight games to earn trip to Tupelo, Miss.
SIAC (3): This league has been surprisingly strong this season, with three teams all ranked in the top eight in this week's poll. Fort Valley State, Paine, and Tuskegee have been locked in a tight race for the regular season title, as all three teams had at least three losses in SIAC play heading into the final week of the regular season.
Sunshine State (1): It appears that only one team will advance to the NCAA tourney from the SSC this season, which will likely be the winner of the Sunshine State Conference tournament. Florida Southern and Tampa seem the most likely candidates to earn an automatic bid.
SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION
1. Shaw
2. Clayton State
3. Carson-Newman
4. Columbus State
5. Wingate
6. USC Aiken
7. GC&SU
8. Fayetteville State
9. Johnson C. Smith
10. Newberry
ANALYSIS: Now let's take a look at the South Atlantic region.
CIAA (2): Shaw seems to be a lock to reach its third straight NCAA tournament. Meanwhile, Fayetteville State and Johnson C. Smith look to vie for a potential second bid for the CIAA.
Peach Belt (4): The recent forfeiture of 17 wins by Armstrong Atlantic State is a big blow to the PBC, which had its sights on sending on five teams to postseason play for the second year in a row. Clayton State has been one of the big surprises of the season thus far, while Columbus State hasn't been much of a slouch, either. USC Aiken and GC&SU have work to do to solidify its hopes of reaching postseason play.
South Atlantic (2): Carson-Newman plays host to Wingate in a winner-take-all battle for the regular season title. Newberry is ranked 10th in this week's regional poll, but will likely need to win the SAC tournament to reach the NCAA's.

CLAYTON STATE MEN UPSET #2 KENNESAW STATE
The loss proved to be very costly for KSU, as USC Upstate defeated Lander 81-64, also on Wednesday night. The win, combined with Kennesaw State's upset loss, allowed the Spartans to pull into a tie for the Peach Belt Conference regular season lead with one game to play. USC Upstate defeated KSU on the road 81-70 on Jan. 15. The Fighting Owls now must defeat North Florida on Saturday, and hope UNC Pembroke can upset USC Upstate Saturday in order to win their second straight outright Peach Belt Conference regular season title.

Delta State (14-11, 6-8) at Ouachita Baptist (15-10, 7-7)--Thursday 6 p.m. CST

Central Arkansas (20-6, 14-1) at Southern Arkansas (16-9, 7-7)--Thursday 6 p.m. CST
UCA has already clinched the Gulf South Conference West Division title with one game remaining.
But the Sugar Bears can play a role in who joins them in Tupelo, Miss. for next week's Gulf South Conference tournament, as the Lady Riders currently sit tied with Ouachita Baptist for third place, while Arkansas-Monticello is 7-8 in GSC West play, followed by Delta State at 6-8. The top five teams in both the East and West divisions will advance to the Gulf South Conference tournament.
TOP MEN'S GAMES:
Albany State (16-10, 15-4) at Paine (14-11, 12-6)--Thursday 7:30 p.m. EST
Thanks to Tuesday night's 75-66 win at Benedict, the Golden Rams have clinched the SIAC regular season title, and will be seeded first at next week's SIAC tournament. However, the Lions still have an outside shot at second place should they knock off the ASU men at home.
Delta State (16-9, 10-4) at Ouachita Baptist (16-9, 8-6)--Thursday 8 p.m. CST
The Statesmen moved into sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference West Division thanks to their easy 78-54 win over Christian Brothers Monday night. TOP WOMEN'S GAME:
Columbus State (18-7, 11-3) at Georgia College & State University (17-8, 8-6)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST
Thanks to the recent misfortune by the Armstrong Atlantic State University women's basketball team (see story below), both CSU and GC&SU gained one extra win in Peach Belt Conference play, as the Lady Cougars now share the conference lead with Clayton State, while the Lady Bobcats are assured of finishing no worse than .500 in conference action. CSU can gain the number one seed in the PBC South Division outright by winning its last two games, plus at least one loss by Clayton State.
TOP MEN'S GAME:
Kennesaw State (22-3, 12-2) at Clayton State (16-12, 9-5)--Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST
The Fighting Owls will put their nine game winning streak on the line against the Lakers, who have lost back-to-back games within the last week. KSU can clinch no worse than a tie for the Peach Belt Conference regular season title with a win. This is the final regular-season meeting between the two suburban Atlanta schools, as Kennesaw State will make the move to the NCAA Division I level in time for the 2005-06 academic year.

TOP MEN'S GAME:
Albany State (15-10, 14-4) at Benedict (16-8, 12-5)--Tuesday 7:30 p.m. EST

Valdosta State (18-6, 8-4) at Montevallo (20-5, 10-2)--Monday 7:30 p.m. CST
Thanks to their 83-71 win over West Florida, combined with third-ranked West Georgia's 88-65 upset loss at Alabama-Huntsville, both on Saturday night, the Falcons now have sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference East Division. Now the defending GSC champion Falcons hope to move one step closer to clinching the GSC East title with a win over the Blazers. Speaking of the VSU men, they still have an outside shot of gaining one of the top two seeds for the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. However, the Blazers need wins over both UM and West Florida, plus a lot of help.

The Statesmen head west to Conway, Ark. to face the Bears in a battle for position in the Gulf South Conference West Division. On Monday, the DSU men downed Southern Arkansas 77-56, while UCA edged Harding 71-68.

Augusta State (12-11, 6-6) at UNC Pembroke (14-9, 6-6)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST
Armstrong Atlantic State (17-9, 7-5) at Georgia College & State University (15-8, 6-6)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST
If anyone had said at the beginning of this season that the UNCP women would even contend for a first round bye in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, much less the PBC North Division title, a lot of people would have said, "yeah, right!" But the Braves have been one of the biggest surprises in the PBC this season, as they are currently tied with Augusta and Lander for second place in the division. All three teams trail current PBC North leader USC Aiken (17-9, 7-5) by one game with four games left in the regular season.
As for the AASU-GC&SU match-up, this is a must-win game for both teams, as the Lady Pirates currently sit in third place in the PBC South Division, while the Lady Bobcats stand just one game behind in fourth place. GC&SU will look to deliver some payback after losing 72-69 at AASU in the Peach Belt Conference opener on Jan. 5.

TOP WOMEN'S GAMES:
USC Upstate (11-11, 4-7) at Georgia College & State University (14-8, 5-6)--Monday 5:30 p.m. EST
West Florida (16-7, 8-2) at West Georgia (13-9, 5-5)--Monday 5:30 p.m. EST
This may not be a "top" game in the truest sense, but this is a must win game for both USCS and GC&SU. The Spartans have lost four games in a row, while the Lady Bobcats have lost back-to-back games against current Peach Belt Conference leaders Clayton State and Columbus State, respectively, both of whom sit at 9-3 in league action. On the other hand, UWF will try for its fifth straight win, while the Braves are coming off a 57-51 upset win over 22nd ranked Valdosta State on Saturday night. VSU's loss, combined with its win at Lincoln Memorial, allowed the Argonauts to pull into a first place tie with the Lady Blazers in the Gulf South Conference East Division. However, thanks to its earlier win over VSU, UWF currently holds the tiebreaker advantage for the top spot in the GSC East.
