#17 Henderson State (14-5, 5-1) at #20 Delta State (15-3, 5-1)--Saturday 4 p.m. CST

Although first place is at stake in the Gulf South Conference West Division as of press time, this game has lost some of its luster, as the Reddies saw their 10-game winnning streak end with a 65-62 upset loss at home to Ouachita Baptist Thursday night. As for the Statesmen, they moved into that first place tie with HSU after downing Arkansas Tech 90-77, also on Thursday night.

ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC UPSETS CLAYTON STATE

Men’s Basketball: No. 25 AASU 63, No. 2 Clayton State 58
Women’s Basketball: No. 15 Clayton State 82, AASU 72

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Tory Harris’ career-high 27 points helped the No. 25-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball team usher an upset of No. 2-ranked Clayton State, 63-58, in Peach Belt Conference action on Wednesday evening in Savannah. The win represents the highest-ranked opponent that the Pirates have defeated in the Peach Belt era.

The Pirates (14-4, 5-2 PBC) and the Lakers (17-1, 6-1 PBC) played a tight defensive contest in the first half with AASU tying up the game at 24-all on Harris’ jumper right before intermission. AASU did not take its first lead of the second half until a three-pointer by Harris put the Pirates up, 35-33, with 14:03 left, and moments later a 10-0 run by the Pirates snapped a 35-all tie and gave AASU its largest lead of the game, 45-30, with 11:17 left.

Clayton State cut the lead to two, 50-48, with 2:53 left, but another Harris bucket put the Pirates back up by four, and AASU clinched the game in the final 70 seconds by hitting eight of eight free throws. Harris hit 10-of-14 shots from the floor for his 2 points, while Bryan Taylor added a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. John Beugnot and Todd McLaurin each added 12 points for the Pirates.

In the women’s contest, the No. 15-ranked Lady Lakers (16-2, 6-1 PBC) survived a scare from the Lady Pirates (10-8, 4-3 PBC) but fought through a poor-shooting second half for an 82-72 victory. Both teams shot better than 50 percent in a high-scoring first half that saw Clayton State take a 52-42 lead at the break, but the Lady Pirates tied the game at 64-all on a Kaneetha Gordon free throw with 9:01 remaining.

AASU went scoreless over the next three minutes, however, and the Lady Lakers pulled away for the win. Sharon Wiles led all scorers for the Lady Lakers with a season-high 24 points – 20 in the first half – while the Lady Pirates were led by Tana Griffiths’ 20 points and double-doubles from Kaneetha Gordon (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Lacey Willis (12 points, 11 rebounds).

AASU returns to action on Saturday, January 20, with a PBC doubleheader at Lander at 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men).

In the women's game, the Lady Wolves reached the .500 mark in conference play with a 53-51 upset win over the Lady Tigers, while the UWG men finally won their first-ever GSC contest as the Wolves by knocking off the Tigers 77-75 in the nightcap.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Valdosta State (12-4, 1-1) at Alabama-Huntsville (L)-- (12-4, 2-1)--Monday 8 p.m. CST

With all seven teams in the Gulf South Conference East Division all having at least one loss in conference action, this game has even more importance, as the loser will find itself saddled with its second league loss. The Chargers bounced back from a tough loss at Montevallo to defeat West Florida 80-74 at home Saturday night. Earlier that day, the Blazers saw their nine game winning streak get ground to a halt by shooting just 35.2 percent in a 77-63 loss at North Alabama.

TOP WOMEN'S GAMES

USC Aiken (10-4, 2-1) at Columbus State (11-3, 3-0)--Saturday 5:30 p.m. EST

It's the Lady Cougars hosting the Lady Pacers in a battle of division leaders in the Peach Belt Conference, well, sort of! While the CSU women have won eight straight games going into this contest, USCA will try to bounce back after being knocked off by UNC Pembroke, 66-54 on Wednesday. The loss to the Braves dropped the Lady Pacers into a three-way tie for first place in the North Division with UNCP and USC Upstate, all of whom are 2-1 in PBC action. On the other hand, the Lady Cougars are tied with nationally-ranked Clayton State at 3-0 to lead the South Division, in spite of having the longest current win streak among PBC women's squads.

Southern Arkansas (5-8, 2-0) at Arkansas Tech (9-5, 2-0)--Saturday 6 p.m. CST

Well, how about a game like this to put in the "Who would've thunk it?" category, as the Golden Suns play host to the Muleriders in an unlikely battle for a share of first place in the Gulf South Conference West Division. While both teams can claim wins over former nationally top-ranked Henderson State, with SAU claiming a 64-60 upset win over the suddenly vulnerable Lady Reddies Thursday night, only one of them can go to 3-0 in the GSC West once all is said and done.

#17 Christian Brothers (13-2, 2-0) at Henderson State (11-4, 2-0)--Saturday 4 p.m. CST

Most years, the road to the Gulf South Conference West Division title either goes through Cleveland, Miss., or Arkadelphia, Ark. The nationally-ranked Buccaneers hope that road goes through Beale Street, as they pay visit to Reddie country in this key early-season showdown.

USC Upstate (10-4, 2-1) at Augusta State (11-3, 3-0)--Saturday 4 p.m. EST

The Spartans cross the Savannah River into Georgia to face the surprising Jaguars in this juicy Peach Belt Conference tilt. Augusta stayed unbeaten in PBC play by keeping Georgia College & State University winless in conference action thanks to an 83-70 road win on Wednesday.

Pirates Slip In OT To No. 2 Clayton, 69-64

MORROW, Ga. (January 10) - Junior William Kane hit a huge three-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime at No. 2 Clayton State, but the Lakers pulled away from the Pirates in the extra frame, knocking off No.20 Armstrong Atlantic, 69-64, in Peach Belt Conference action on Wednesday evening.

The Pirates (11-3, 2-1 PBC) opened the contest strong, taking a 12-point halftime lead on the Lakers (14-0, 3-0 PBC), 33-21. Clayton State hit 56 percent from the floor in capping a second-half comeback.

With the win, the VSU men (12-3, 1-0) have now won nine straight games dating back to Dec. 2, when they defeated Georgia Southwestern State 66-59. The Blazers also pulled into a first place with idle West Florida (8-5, 1-0) after the hard-fought win.

JAGUARS EDGE COUGARS IN PBC OPENER

Augusta, GA - Columbus State rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit to take a nine-point lead in the second half, but could not hold off a late Jaguar run in falling 81-75 to Augusta State in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both schools. CSU falls to 7-5 (0-1 in the PBC), while Augusta State moves to 9-3 (1-0).

"We got hot in the second half and made a bunch of shots," said CSU coach Doug Branson. "We spent some energy getting back in the game and making our run and I think we sort of lost our legs a little and lost our defensive intensity. That (defense) is where we were winning the game and when we lost that intensity, they were able to make their run."

ASU out-scored the Cougars 15-2 over the first six minutes of play. That run became 23-8 by the 12:02 mark when Tyrekus Bowman hit a layup for two of his 19 first-half points. Bowman also completed a rare first-half double-double with 10 rebounds in the period. The CSU offense finally responded and used a 19-7 run to pull the margin to just 30-27 with 5:09 to play in the half. ASU out-scored the Cougars 4-2 over the remaining time to take a 34-29 lead into halftime.

CSU came out in the second half with intensity on both ends of the floor. Trailing 38-29 after ASU scored the first four points of the half, CSU got a trey from Corris Portis and used that to fuel a 22-7 run. An Alton Hart layup with 15:26 left gave the Cougars their first lead of the contest, and his second layup less than a minute later capped the big run and gave CSU a 51-45 lead.

CSU took its biggest lead at 56-47 with 13:24 left on a Ron Robinson triple. At that point, ASU began to take advantage of some defensive fatigue by CSU and started to whittle away at the lead. After Ben Madgen's three-pointer tied the game at 61 with 8:29 left, Robinson put the Cougar back up by four by completing a rare four-point play. He drained a three-pointer, was fouled, and made the ensuing free-throw for a 65-61 lead. The Jags responded with a 14-4 run to re-take the lead for good. Two Demetrius Howard hit two free-throws with 2:31 left to give ASU a 75-69 lead.

CSU got treys from Justin Wilson and Robinson to get back to within two points with 50 seconds left, but Augusta State sealed the game by hitting four free-throws in the final 39 seconds.

"We got some momentum with our run early in the half, but we just did not continue it and finish it off. Give them (ASU) credit, though, they did some nice things and started going back inside to what they had been successful with in the first half. Now we have to re-group, re-focus, and get ready to play on Saturday," said Branson.

Bowman finished with a game-high 29 points to go with 18 rebounds to lead the Jaguars. Daniel Dixon added 15, while Madgen tallied 14 and Garret Siler 10. ASU shot 50 percent in the second half and 43 percent overall.

Robinson led CSU with 21 points - 15 of those on treys - and six assists. Corris Portis added 15 points and five rebounds, while Alton Hart collected another double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with three blocked shots. CSU shot 44 percent in the second half to finish at 39.7 percent overall. The Cougars won the battle of the boards 47-38, but committed 18 turnovers to just eight for the Jaguars.

CSU continues its PBC road trip on Saturday, heading to UNC Pembroke for a 4 PM matchup. Augusta State makes the short trip to USC Aiken on Saturday night at 7:30.

GC&SU BASEBALL RANKED #2 IN PRESEASON POLL

GCSU Baseball Named #2 in Preseason National Poll

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – On the strength of a 53-12 season a year ago and solid core of returners, the Georgia College & State University baseball team was selected No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Division II Preseason Poll.

Back are formidable seniors in 2006 Second Team All-American Michael Antonini (Aston, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara/Gloucester County College) on the mound, All-Region performer Daniel Heflin (Topeka, Kan./Topeka West/Johnson County C.C./Armstrong Atlantic State Univ.) at first base and captains Justin Mills (Ivey, Ga./John Milledge Academy) and Casey Cullen (Dublin, Ga./Dublin/Middle Georgia Coll.) in the outfield.

The Bobcats kick off the 2007 season at No. 1 University of Tampa, Friday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. The home portion of the GCSU schedule begins Friday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. against North Greenville College.

Source: Georgia College & State University Sports Information

Analysis: Despite a 53-12 record last year, the GC&SU Bobcats fell short of their ultimate goal: reaching the NCAA Division II World Series. This year, though, head coach Chris Calciano and his charges hope to reach that goal of making the trip to Montgomery, Ala. Perhaps an early season test at top-ranked and defending national champion Tampa will give the Bobcats just how good they might be.

COLLEGIATE BASEBALL PRESEASON POLL RELEASED

Columbus, GA - Columbus State is among five teams from the Peach Belt Conference ranked in the top 40 in a preseason poll released by the Collegiate Baseball Magazine on Thursday. CSU will begin the 2007 season ranked #14. Georgia College & State University is ranked #2, Francis Marion #6, USC Aiken #22, and USC Upstate checks in at #37. Armstrong Atlantic State, Lander, and UNC Pembroke all recieved votes. Tampa, the defending D-II champion, is ranked preseason #1.

CSU went 41-20 last season and will open the 2007 campaign at home against West Alabama in a doubleheader on February 3.

The CSU women enter the new year on a five-game winning streak, with Tuskegee becoming its most recent victim in a 61-56 win in their own Holiday Classic last Saturday. Meanwhile, Augusta State has won four straight contests, with the most recent victory a 76-67 triumph over Converse last Friday.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Columbus State (7-4) at Augusta State (8-3)--Thursday 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Cougars travel from one end of Georgia to the other to open Peach Belt Conference, as they face the surprising Jaguars. The CSU men have won seven of their last nine games since starting the season 0-2 under interim head coach Doug Branson, who replaced the retired Herbert Greene. AASU SWEEPS PBC OPENERS

Men’s Basketball: AASU 66, No. 21 GCSU 64
Women’s Basketball: AASU 71, GCSU 67

SAVANNAH, Ga. – William Kane’s floater in the lane with four seconds remaining lifted the Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball team to a 66-64 victory over No. 21-ranked GCSU in both team’s Peach Belt Conference opener on Wednesday evening in Savannah. The win by the Pirate men capped a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats as the AASU women notched a come-from-behind victory over the Lady Bobcats, 71-67.Kane’s heroics were needed as the Bobcats (10-2, 0-1 PBC) erased a five-point deficit in the final 24 seconds. Shaun Keaton hit two free throws, then after a Pirate turnover, Keaton buried a three-pointer with 9.6 seconds remaining to tie the score at 66-all. The Pirates called time out, then inbounded the ball to senior Tory Harris – who beat the Bobcats on a last-second shot in last year’s PBC semifinals. Harris drew a double team bringing the ball up the court, so he threw a jump pass to Kane, who dribbled once into the lane and put up the floater to put the Pirates up by two. Shejdie Childs had a last-ditch attempt to win for the Bobcats, but his halfcourt shot missed as time expired, giving the Pirates (10-2, 1-0 PBC) their second win over a nationally-ranked team this season.

Keaton led all scorers with 24 points off the bench for GCSU, while Aaron Clark collected a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds and Aaron Gibbs added 14 points. AASU was led by Bryan Taylor’s 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamaal Galloway added 11 points.

In the women’s contest, the Lady Pirates erased a 13-point deficit in the second half and Nicole Hornage’s three-point basket snapped a 66-all tie with 39 seconds remaining to give the Pirates the win. Kaneetha Gordon tallied a career-high 22 points, while Tana Griffiths’ 11 points included three second-half three-pointers to help AASU (7-5, 1-0 PBC) win its PBC opener over the Lady Bobcats (9-3, 0-1 PBC). Marquita Driskell led GCSU with 16 points, while Tiauna Brantley added 10.

AASU returns to action on Saturday, January 6, with a PBC doubleheader against North Georgia at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. GCSU is next in action at Lander on Saturday in PBC action.

PEACH BELT GOES BROADBAND

AIKEN, S.C..--USC Aiken’s home men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader with Augusta State on Saturday, January 6 has been selected by the NCAA for live broadband streaming through CSTV. The women’s game begins at 5:30 PM with the men’s contest to follow at 7:30 PM. Fans can log onto www.NCAAsports.com/DII for the live broadcast.

“This is a great opportunity for national exposure of not only our basketball programs, but of our University as well,” said Brad Fields, USC Aiken Assistant AD for Communications. “We already have an audience that tunes into our live audio/video streaming of games, but on Saturday, those folks will have the chance to see a broadcast with all the bells and whistles of a television production.”

NCAA Division II recently partnered with CSTV on a three-year regular-season television and broadband package agreement that will showcase Division II football and men’s and women’s basketball games live. On January 6, six games will be broadcast live with two of them occurring at USC Aiken. The doubleheader is the only one in the Peach Belt Conference scheduled for 2006-07 (Armstrong Atlantic State and Columbus State will have their February 24 contest aired on CSTV television).

Both USC Aiken squads enter the week with reason for excitement. The Lady Pacers are off to an 8-3 start and carry a four-game winning streak into Wednesday’s conference opener with USC Upstate at “The Courthouse”. The Pacers are 5-7 and have added Abdul Herrera, a 6-11 transfer from Cincinnati, to the mix when they too take the floor on Wednesday at 7:30 against the Spartans.

Brad Muller, former radio voice of Georgia College & State University athletics, will provide the play-by-play on Saturday while Ken Gerlinger, Director of Media Relations at the Peach Belt Conference, will serve as color analyst.
