MUST SEE GAMES--02/25/2006

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Benedict (19-7, 15-4) at Paine (18-8, 14-5)--Saturday 5:30 p.m. EST

The final day of the regular season has arrived, and while Fort Valley State (25-1, 19-0) has already wrapped up the SIAC regular season title, the Lady Tigers and Lady Lions will battle for no worse than a second place tie. The Benedict women routed Paine 84-61 on Jan. 31 in Columbia, S.C., and can clinch the #2 seed for next week's SIAC tournament outright with the season sweep of the Lady Lions. By the way, the Lady Tigers did give FVSU all it could handle Thursday night before losing a 61-60 heartbreaker to the Lady Wildcats on the road.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Benedict (21-5, 19-2) at Paine (19-7, 16-5)--Saturday 7:30 p.m. EST

And while we're on the subject of the SIAC, why not highlight the men's game as well. In fact, although the Tigers have already clinched the top seed for next week's SIAC tournament in Birmingham, Ala., and the Lions have wrapped up second place, both teams still have something to play for, as Benedict enters the game ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II South Region poll, while Paine hopes to gain some much-needed momentum heading into the conference tournament with a win.

CLAYTON STATE WOMEN KNOCK OFF NORTH GEORGIA

The Clayton State University women's basketball team spoiled the perfect Peach Belt Conference season of the North Georgia College & State University Lady Saints by pulling off a stunning 76-75 win in overtime at Dahlonega, Ga Wednesday night. The loss snapped not only snapped a 15-game winning streak for NGCSU, but also gave the Lady Saints their first-ever PBC loss in their inaugural season in the league, as they fell to 22-4 overall, and 18-1 in conference action. COUNTDOWN TO MARCH MADNESS

TOP WOMEN'S GAMES

Francis Marion (10-13, 8-9) at UNC Pembroke (L)--(14-10, 9-8)--Monday 5:30 p.m. EST
GC&SU (14-11, 9-9) at Armstrong Atlantic State (13-11, 8-9)--Monday 5:30 p.m. EST

Now that North Georgia (22-3, 18-0) has clinched the Peach Belt Conference regular season title, and Clayton State (20-4, 14-3) has earned the top seed for the PBC tournament (the Lady Saints can't compete in the conference tournament because of their transition from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II level), the main focus now turns to finalizing the remaining seeds for next week's event in Greenwood, S.C, as the four teams mentioned above are separated by no more than one game for the third seed. By the way, NGCSU clinched the regular season crown by defeating the Lady Bobcats 77-63 on Saturday, while Clayton State finished second in PBC play by crushing UNCP 65-29. If that wasn't enough, the Braves will also take a three game losing streak into the FMU contest. Plus, UNCP also sits one game behind USC Upstate (13-11, 10-7) for third place (#2 PBC tournament seed).

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Columbus State (20-7, 14-4) at Clayton State (20-4, 13-4)--Monday 7:30 p.m. EST
GC&SU (18-6, 15-3) at Armstrong Atlantic State (19-5, 13-4)--Monday 7:30 p.m. EST

While the Clayton State women have already sewn up the top seed for the Peach Belt Conference tournament, the men's regular season title, as well as the top seed in the men's bracket, are both still up for grabs, as the top four teams in the league standings meet to decide who will get at least a share of the crown. Three of those four games won their games Saturday, with the Lakers pounding UNC Pembroke 80-52, CSU getting by Francis Marion 78-67, and the Bobcats defeating North Georgia 91-84. GC&SU remained in sole possession of first place in the PBC with the win over the Saints. Don't be surprised if the race for the conference crown comes down to the final day of the regular season, which is Saturday, February 25.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

USC Upstate (12-10, 9-6) at Georgia College & State University (13-10, 8-8)--Wednesday 5:30 p.m. EST

With apologies to North Georgia (20-3, 16-0), which can clinch no worse than a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular season title with a win at Columbus State (15-11, 8-8), this aforementioned contest carries just as much weight as far as implications for the upcoming PBC tournament go. Wins by GC&SU and Columbus State, combined with a UNC Pembroke loss at Augusta State Wednesday, could put both the Lady Bobcats and Lady Cougars, respectively, within half a game of the Lady Braves and Spartans in the race for the second and third seeds in the conference tournament (Remember, North Georgia can't compete in the PBC tourney due to their transitional status from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II level). But a Upstate win over GC&SU, combined with a UNCP loss to the Lady Jaguars, could give the Spartans sole possession of third place in the PBC.

TOP MEN'S GAME

North Georgia (14-8, 10-6) at Columbus State (18-7, 12-4)--Wednesday 7:30 p.m. EST

Just when things couldn't get any tighter in the race for the Peach Belt Conference men's basketball regular season title, they just did. The Cougars found themselves on the wrong end of a 73-70 upset loss at Augusta State Saturday night, only to bounce back two nights later to defeat Lander 77-67. Now CSU must face a Saints squad that has won five straight games, the latest victory a 78-64 triumph over a USC Upstate team (13-8, 8-7) that has yet to find the win column in February, having lost four games in a row heading into Wednesday's contest at current PBC leader GC&SU. Wins by CSU and Armstrong Atlantic State, combined with a Bobcats loss to the Spartans, would create a three-way tie for first place between the Pirates, Bobcats, and Cougars, with idle Clayton State (19-4, 12-4) trailing by half a game.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

West Georgia (16-7, 9-1) at West Florida (18-4, 9-1)--Monday 5:30 p.m. CST

The Braves won their ninth straight game Saturday night, as they downed Valdosta State on the road 58-53. Head Coach Craig Roden and his charges hope to extend their winning streak to ten games in a row against a Lady Argonauts squad that picked up a hard-fought win over visiting Lincoln Memorial 60-53 on Saturday. With the wins in those respective games, both teams clinched a berth in the Gulf South Conference tournament. The winner of this contest not only will take over sole possession of first place in the GSC East, but also will have the inside track on earning that divison's top seed for the conference tournament as well. UWF won the GSC East season opener over the Braves 65-53 in Carrollton, Ga. Jan. 7.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Henderson State (10-11, 6-6) at Christian Brothers (13-9, 7-4)--Monday 7:30 p.m. CST

With Delta State already having clinched the West Division's first spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament, the Buccaneers play host to the Reddies in a game that has postseason implications for both teams. CBU picked a critical road win at Arkansas Tech 78-75 in overtime Thursday night, while HSU fell to Central Arkansas 57-45, also on Thursday.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

West Georgia (15-7, 8-1) at Valdosta State (15-6, 6-3)--Saturday 6 p.m. EST

The Braves will put their eight-game winning streak on the line against the Lady Blazers on the road. Ironically, it was a 47-45 upset win over a then nationally-ranked VSU squad that got the winning streak started for West Georgia. After a disappointing loss at Alabama-Huntsville last Saturday, the Lady Blazers won a hard-fought game in overtime over a scrappy North Alabama squad 64-61 Monday night. It'll be interesting to see if the VSU women can win a key game, and thus tighten up the race in the Gulf South Conference East Division.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

National rankings are courtesy of the NABC/Division II Bulletin poll.

#14 Alabama-Huntsville (19-3, 8-1) at #6 Montevallo (20-2, 8-1)--Saturday 4 p.m. CST
West Georgia (16-6, 5-4) at Valdosta State (13-8, 4-5)--Saturday 8 p.m. EST

The Falcons and Chargers will hook up for the second time this season, with first place in the Gulf South Conference East Division on the line. UM won the first meeting between the two teams in Huntsville 59-55 on Jan. 9. Meanwhile, down in south Georgia, VSU hopes to make the race for the GSC East's other three spots in next month's GSC tournament much tighter with a win over their fiercest arch-rival in the Braves. The Blazers picked up a critical win at North Alabama 90-82 Monday night, while the Braves got by West Alabama at home that same evening 79-74. Although they currently sit in a three-way tie for fourth place with UNA and Lincoln Memorial, the VSU men have already swept the season series with the Lions, but lost to the Railspitters on the road earlier this season. By the way, the Blazers will play host to this aforementioned LMU team Monday night.

2006 D-II SOUTH SPORTS SPRING PREVIEW--GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE BASEBALL

So, your team is the defending champion of your league, yet it's not even picked to finish first in its own division, much less repeat as conference champions. That's what the University of West Alabama Tigers are facing as they look to win a second straight Gulf South Conference baseball title in 2006. Meanwhile, Delta State got the nod as the favorite to win this year's title.

Click here for the complete breakdown of all the teams playing GSC baseball in 2006, including the predicted order of finish.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Armstrong Atlantic State (16-4, 10-3) at GC&SU (13-6, 10-3)--Monday 7:30 p.m. EST
Clayton State (17-3, 10-3) at Columbus State (16-5, 10-2)--Monday 7:30 p.m. EST

The night after the Super Bowl features two games between the top four teams in the Peach Belt Conference men's basketball standings. The Lakers will put their six-game winning streak on the line against the first-place Cougars, while the Bobcats play host to the Pirates in Milledgeville, Ga. By the end of the night, CSU could either remain in sole possession of first place, or there could be at least a two-way tie for the lead.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

Clayton State (16-3, 10-2) at USC Upstate (11-8, 8-4)--Saturday 2 p.m. EST

The Lakers will put their five-game winning streak on the line against a Spartans team that picked up 67-59 road win at Columbus State Wednesday. Clayton State can remain in sole possession of second place in the Peach Belt Conference with a victory.

TOP MEN'S GAMES

Clayton State (16-3, 9-3) at USC Upstate (13-5, 8-4)--Saturday 4 p.m. EST
Montevallo (18-2, 6-1) at West Georgia (15-5, 4-3)--Saturday 7:30 p.m. EST

Like their female counterparts, the Laker men have also won five straight games. They'll take on a Spartans squad still reeling from a 82-60 stomping by Columbus State on the road Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Braves will be playing their fifth nationally-ranked opponent in the sixth-ranked Falcons, who lost the top ranking in the NABC/Division II Bulletin poll after being upset at West Alabama 86-74 last weekend.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME

#10 Henderson State (18-2, 8-1) at Arkansas-Monticello (10-9, 5-4)--Thursday 7 p.m. CST

After winning a 57-56 thriller over Gulf South Conference West Division arch-rival Delta State Monday night, the Lady Reddies must avoid a letdown, as they pay a visit to UAM to face the Cotton Blossoms. Believe it or not, if the regular season right now, the Cotton Blossoms would get the nod for the GSC West's fifth and final spot in the GSC tournament in Tupelo, Miss, despite their so-so record.

TOP MEN'S GAME

Henderson State (9-8, 5-4) at Arkansas-Monticello (13-7, 6-3)--Thursday 5 p.m. CST

With Delta State steadily separating itself from the rest of the GSC West pack, the game between the Reddies and Boll Weevils is especially huge, considering UAM currently sits alone in second place, while HSU is one of three teams currently in a three-way logjam for third place. The Boll Weevils have won three games in a row, while the Reddies will try to bounce back after losing a 67-63 heartbreaker to the Statesmen.
