AASU WOMEN EDGE LENOIR-RHYNE

Women’s College Basketball: AASU 69, Lenoir-Rhyne 66

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior Kaneetha Gordon’s career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds helped the Armstrong Atlantic women’s basketball squad snap a three-game losing streak and pick up a 69-66 win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday night at Alumni Arena in Savannah.
The Lady Pirates (4-3) jumped out to a 31-16 lead in the first half and led by as many as 14 points midway through the second half, but Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2) climbed back into the contest, eventually tying the game at 6-1-all on a Jami Safrit jumper with 4:01 remaining in the contest.

Gordon then converted a three-point play to put the Lady Pirates back up by three, 64-61, only to watch Lenoir-Rhyne take a one-point lead with under a minute remaining on Jacquelyn Kremer’s basket that made the score 66-65. Gordon again answered with a basket just 15 seconds later, giving AASU the final lead in the game, and AASU made two free throws in the final 16 seconds to clinch the victory.

Gordon led all scorers by going 5-for-9 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the free throw line, while sophomore Lacey Willis chipped in 12 points off the bench and junior Lindsay Lieneman added 10 points. Lenoir-Rhyne was led by the duo of Amber Holt and Safrit, who each chipped in 14 points.The Lady Pirates turned the ball over 26 times on the evening, but took advantage of free throws, hitting 20-of-26 from the charity stripe for 77 percent. Lenoir-Rhyne suffered from an off-night from beyond the arc, hitting just three of 20 three-pointers on the evening for 15 percent.

AASU breaks for final exams, then returns to action on Friday, December 15 as the Lady Pirates host Lander in the 2006 Chatham Orthopedics Holiday Classic at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Arena. Lenoir-Rhyne is next in action on Saturday, December 16, as the Bears host Livingstone at 2:00 p.m.
