AASU, GC&SU POST WINS IN CLASSIC

2006 SpringHill Suites Midtown New Year Classic: Day One

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic hit five straight three-pointers inthe first half to spark the Pirates to a 74-64 win over Southern Arkansas in the first day of the 2006 SpringHill Suites Midtown New Year Classic on Friday evening at Alumni Arena. In the day's first game, GCSU held off Ferris State, 68-61.

The Pirates (8-2) took a five-point lead into halftime against the Muleriders (5-6), then opened the second half on a 20-6 run to take control of the contest. Patrick Sanou led the Pirates with 14 points and six rebounds as 12 different AASU players found the scoring column on the night. Bryan Taylor added nine points and seven rebounds, while Southern Arkansas was led by Brandon Bealer's 14 points. AASU outrebounded the Muleriders, 44-27, and went to the free throw line 44 times - a new high for Pirates in the Jeff Burkhamer era.

In the first game, GCSU (9-1) used an 11-2 run midway through the second half to break open a one-point game and hold on against Ferris State (3-8). The Bobcats placed four players in double figures, led by Levert Carter's double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Shaun Keaton added 15 points off the bench. Aaron Clark also contributed adouble-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Shejdie Childs added a rare double-double for point guards with 11 points and 10 assists.Ferris State got a game-high 24 points from Terrance Shaw, who hit 9-of-17 shots from the floor, including 3-of-8 three-pointers, to gowith his nine rebounds and four steals.

The 2006 SpringHill Suites Midtown New Year Classic concludes on Saturday as GCSU faces Southern Arkansas at 2:00 p.m., followed by AASU and Ferris State at 4:00 p.m.
