WEST GEORGIA SWEEPS WEST ALABAMA
And then there were no more undefeated teams in Gulf South Conference East Division play. Or even winless teams in league action for that matter, as West Georgia swept West Alabama in a GSC East doubleheader in Carrollton, Ga. Tuesday night. In the women's game, the Lady Wolves reached the .500 mark in conference play with a 53-51 upset win over the Lady Tigers, while the UWG men finally won their first-ever GSC contest as the Wolves by knocking off the Tigers 77-75 in the nightcap.

#2 LAKERS HOLD OFF #20 PIRATES IN OVERTIME
Pirates Slip In OT To No. 2 Clayton, 69-64
MORROW, Ga. (January 10) - Junior William Kane hit a huge three-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime at No. 2 Clayton State, but the Lakers pulled away from the Pirates in the extra frame, knocking off No.20 Armstrong Atlantic, 69-64, in Peach Belt Conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Pirates (11-3, 2-1 PBC) opened the contest strong, taking a 12-point halftime lead on the Lakers (14-0, 3-0 PBC), 33-21. Clayton State hit 56 percent from the floor in capping a second-half comeback.
AASU trailed by five, 58-53 with 15 seconds left, but Jamaal Galloway was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three free throws. Clayton State made one of two free throws, then Kane hit the three-pointer to send the game into OT. In overtime, the Lakers hit 8-of-10 free throws to pickup the win. Kane led a quartet of Pirates in double figures with 14 points, while Jamaal Galloway added 12 and Patrick Sanou and Tory Harris each added 10.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, January 13, at Francis Marion at 7:30 p.m.

VSU HOLDS OFF UWG 85-82
They may have been the last team to open Gulf South Conference East Division play Tuesday night, but it was worth the wait, as the Valdosta State University Blazers withstood a furious rally from the University of West Georgia Wolves to win 85-82 at Valdosta, Ga.
With the win, the VSU men (12-3, 1-0) have now won nine straight games dating back to Dec. 2, when they defeated Georgia Southwestern State 66-59. The Blazers also pulled into a first place with idle West Florida (8-5, 1-0) after the hard-fought win.

ARKANSAS TECH WOMEN UPSET #1 HENDERSON STATE
There will be a new top-ranked team in NCAA Division II women's basketball this week, thanks to the Arkansas Tech University Golden Suns. ATU handed Henderson State its first loss of the season on the road Saturday, in a 72-55 upset win over the Lady Reddies.

JAGUARS EDGE COUGARS IN PBC OPENER
Augusta, GA - Columbus State rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit to take a nine-point lead in the second half, but could not hold off a late Jaguar run in falling 81-75 to Augusta State in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both schools. CSU falls to 7-5 (0-1 in the PBC), while Augusta State moves to 9-3 (1-0).
"We got hot in the second half and made a bunch of shots," said CSU coach Doug Branson. "We spent some energy getting back in the game and making our run and I think we sort of lost our legs a little and lost our defensive intensity. That (defense) is where we were winning the game and when we lost that intensity, they were able to make their run."
ASU out-scored the Cougars 15-2 over the first six minutes of play. That run became 23-8 by the 12:02 mark when Tyrekus Bowman hit a layup for two of his 19 first-half points. Bowman also completed a rare first-half double-double with 10 rebounds in the period. The CSU offense finally responded and used a 19-7 run to pull the margin to just 30-27 with 5:09 to play in the half. ASU out-scored the Cougars 4-2 over the remaining time to take a 34-29 lead into halftime.
CSU came out in the second half with intensity on both ends of the floor. Trailing 38-29 after ASU scored the first four points of the half, CSU got a trey from Corris Portis and used that to fuel a 22-7 run. An Alton Hart layup with 15:26 left gave the Cougars their first lead of the contest, and his second layup less than a minute later capped the big run and gave CSU a 51-45 lead.
CSU took its biggest lead at 56-47 with 13:24 left on a Ron Robinson triple. At that point, ASU began to take advantage of some defensive fatigue by CSU and started to whittle away at the lead. After Ben Madgen's three-pointer tied the game at 61 with 8:29 left, Robinson put the Cougar back up by four by completing a rare four-point play. He drained a three-pointer, was fouled, and made the ensuing free-throw for a 65-61 lead. The Jags responded with a 14-4 run to re-take the lead for good. Two Demetrius Howard hit two free-throws with 2:31 left to give ASU a 75-69 lead.
CSU got treys from Justin Wilson and Robinson to get back to within two points with 50 seconds left, but Augusta State sealed the game by hitting four free-throws in the final 39 seconds.

Back are formidable seniors in 2006 Second Team All-American Michael Antonini (Aston, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara/Gloucester County College) on the mound, All-Region performer Daniel Heflin (Topeka, Kan./Topeka West/Johnson County C.C./Armstrong Atlantic State Univ.) at first base and captains Justin Mills (Ivey, Ga./John Milledge Academy) and Casey Cullen (Dublin, Ga./Dublin/Middle Georgia Coll.) in the outfield.

Columbus, GA - Columbus State is among five teams from the Peach Belt Conference ranked in the top 40 in a preseason poll released by the Collegiate Baseball Magazine on Thursday. CSU will begin the 2007 season ranked #14. Georgia College & State University is ranked #2, Francis Marion #6, USC Aiken #22, and USC Upstate checks in at #37. SAVANNAH, Ga. – William Kane’s floater in the lane with four seconds remaining lifted the Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball team to a 66-64 victory over No. 21-ranked GCSU in both team’s Peach Belt Conference opener on Wednesday evening in Savannah. The win by the Pirate men capped a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats as the AASU women notched a come-from-behind victory over the Lady Bobcats, 71-67.Kane’s heroics were needed as the Bobcats (10-2, 0-1 PBC) erased a five-point deficit in the final 24 seconds. Shaun Keaton hit two free throws, then after a Pirate turnover, Keaton buried a three-pointer with 9.6 seconds remaining to tie the score at 66-all. The Pirates called time out, then inbounded the ball to senior Tory Harris – who beat the Bobcats on a last-second shot in last year’s PBC semifinals. Harris drew a double team bringing the ball up the court, so he threw a jump pass to Kane, who dribbled once into the lane and put up the floater to put the Pirates up by two. Shejdie Childs had a last-ditch attempt to win for the Bobcats, but his halfcourt shot missed as time expired, giving the Pirates (10-2, 1-0 PBC) their second win over a nationally-ranked team this season.
Keaton led all scorers with 24 points off the bench for GCSU, while Aaron Clark collected a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds and Aaron Gibbs added 14 points. AASU was led by Bryan Taylor’s 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamaal Galloway added 11 points.

LAKERS WIN AT BUZZER, BOBCATS LOSE HEARTBREAKER
Two nationally ranked NCAA Division II men's basketball teams from the Peach Belt Conference opened league play on the road Wednesday night. But only one of them left with a win, as Todd McLaurin made a desperation trey at the buzzer to lead #2 Clayton State to a 67-64 win over Georgia Southwestern State at Americus, Ga.

LANDER WOMEN WIN PEACH BELT CONFERENCE OPENER
The Lander University Lady Bearcats downed Francis Marion 74-61 in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams at Florence, S.C. Tuesday night. The Lander women fought their way to the .500 (5-5, 1-0 PBC) thanks to a 23 point, 13 assist performance from Tiara Good.

CLAYTON STATE STILL #2 IN NABC POLL
The Clayton State University men's basketball team maintained the #2 ranking in this week's NABC/NCAA Division II poll. Georgia College & State University and Christian Brothers University were the only other from D-II South Nation to earn spots in the top 25, as the Bobcats are ranked 21st, while the Buccaneers come in at #25. Montevallo, which held the #10 national ranking in the previous poll, dropped out of the rankings after back-to-back losses to Grand Valley State and Presbyterian in the Florida Southern Holiday Classic at Lakeland, Fla. last week.
On the women's side, Henderson State held on to the top ranking in the ESPN/USA Today poll, while Delta State dropped two spots to #13, Clayton State rose three spots to #17, and Fort Valley State fell six spots to #25.

PEACH BELT GOES BROADBAND
AIKEN, S.C..--USC Aiken’s home men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader with Augusta State on Saturday, January 6 has been selected by the NCAA for live broadband streaming through CSTV. The women’s game begins at 5:30 PM with the men’s contest to follow at 7:30 PM. Fans can log onto www.NCAAsports.com/DII for the live broadcast.
“This is a great opportunity for national exposure of not only our basketball programs, but of our University as well,” said Brad Fields, USC Aiken Assistant AD for Communications. “We already have an audience that tunes into our live audio/video streaming of games, but on Saturday, those folks will have the chance to see a broadcast with all the bells and whistles of a television production.”
NCAA Division II recently partnered with CSTV on a three-year regular-season television and broadband package agreement that will showcase Division II football and men’s and women’s basketball games live. On January 6, six games will be broadcast live with two of them occurring at USC Aiken. The doubleheader is the only one in the Peach Belt Conference scheduled for 2006-07 (Armstrong Atlantic State and Columbus State will have their February 24 contest aired on CSTV television).
Both USC Aiken squads enter the week with reason for excitement. The Lady Pacers are off to an 8-3 start and carry a four-game winning streak into Wednesday’s conference opener with USC Upstate at “The Courthouse”. The Pacers are 5-7 and have added Abdul Herrera, a 6-11 transfer from Cincinnati, to the mix when they too take the floor on Wednesday at 7:30 against the Spartans.

USC AIKEN STUNS WINSTON-SALEM STATE
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Nola Grant turned in her best game in two years with 11 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in leading USC Aiken (8-3) to a wire-to-wire win over Winston-Salem State (4-13) 61-56 on Sunday afternoon at the C.E. Gaines Center. The win marked the program’s first victory over an NCAA Division I opponent since a 64-56 defeat of Coastal Carolina in 1991. The Lady Pacers had dropped their last 11 against Division I foes.
With their fourth-straight win, the best such streak in two years, USCA also extended its road winning streak to four games, the best since 2001-02 season.
Playing their second road game in less than 48 hours, the Lady Pacers showed no signs of fatigue, drilling their first six shots to open the game on a 13-6 run. Meredith Legg knocked down a three-pointer with 15:12 on the clock to cap the opening spurt.
Legg, who has made at least one trey in 13-straight games, finished with 11 points on 4-of-8 from the field.
Shalonda Carter’s offensive stick-back with 11:00 remaining in the opening stanza drew the Lady Rams within five at 20-15, but the Lady Pacers countered with a 10-0 run capped by Avonte Williams’ triple to extend the cushion to 30-15 with 8:34 left in the half.
Carter just missed notching her seventh double double of the season with 15 points and nine rebounds on 4-of-13 shooting. Williams added eight points and four assists to USC Aiken’s cause.
With 2:10 until the break, Jordon Thomas converted a lay-up attempt to give USC Aiken its largest lead of the game 38-22. Lavontay Johnson drained a trey and then one of two charity tosses to set the half-time margin at 38-26.
The Lady Pacers maintained their comfortable lead into the latter portion of the final stanza. Kadina Baldwin converted an old-fashioned three-point-play with 6:10 left to draw Winston-Salem State within six at 48-42, but that would be as close as the Lady Rams could get. Baldwin poured in 18 of her game-high 23 in the second half.
A couple of fastbreak lay-ups pushed the spread back into double figures for USCA at 52-42 with less than five minutes to play. The Lady Pacers connected on 7-of-8 free throws attempts inside the final 2:50 to ice the win. Baldwin hit a cosmetic three-pointer at the buzzer.
Senior point guard Mindy Allee tied Grant and Legg for team-high honors with 11 points to go with four assists and three steals in 32 minutes of action. MORROW, Ga. --- DECEMBER 31, 2006 --- The 3-point baskets were falling for the Clayton State Laker men’s basketball team on Sunday as the Lakers rolled to an impressive 88-54 rout over visiting Arkansas-Monticello in the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Clayton State, the second-ranked team in the nation in Division II, set a single-game school record with 15 3-point baskets, eclipsing the former mark of 14 set last season against Francis Marion. The performance capped off a sterling three-game performance in the Heritage Bank Classic in which the Lakers connected on a whopping 36 baskets from 3-point range.
Arkansas-Monticello, coached by former Arkansas-Little Rock head coach Mike Newell, entered Sunday’s game averaging 80 points a game. However, Clayton State ’s suffocating defensive pressure held the Boll Weevils 26 points under their average and they were also held to 36 percent shooting from the field.
Just like Saturday’s victory over Edward Waters, Clayton State got off to a fast start again against Arkansas-Monticello, a team that advanced to the NCAA Division II “Sweet 16” last season. Ahead 13-7, the Lakers went on a 17-2 run over a five-minute span.
Luis Rodriguez started the onslaught with a 3-point basket at the 13:48 mark, followed by another from both Todd McLaurin and John Beugnot. McLaurin’s lay-up at the 8:22 mark gave the Lakers a 31-10 lead. Clayton State ’s largest lead of the half was 25 points, 38-13 on a baseline jump shot by Beugnot with 3:28 remaining.
In the first half alone, Clayton State shot 52 percent from the field, including a sizzling 67 percent (8-for-12) from 3-point range.

GC&SU WOMEN TOP TUSCULUM 64-52
Columbus, GA - Marquita Driskell dropped in 25 points to go with six rebounds as Georgia College & State University topped Tusculum College 64-52 in the CSU Women's Holiday Classic. The Bobcats' second win in the event moves their overall record to 9-2, while Tusculum's second straight loss drops the Pioneers to 8-3 on the season.
The Pioneers led for only one brief stint in the first half, covering a span of less than three minutes. A Brooke Underwood three-pointer gave TC an 8-5 lead with 15:15 to play in the half, but an Ashley Williams rebound and put-back at the 13:39 mark gave GC & SU the lead and became part of an overall 18-2 run by the Bobcats. A Driskell layup closed the run and gave GC & SU a 23-10 lead with 9:16 left in the half. Tusculum would get the lead to single digits just once more in the half before the Bobcats took a 33-22 lead into the break.
Underwood scored the first basket of the second half for the Pioneers to cut the lead to nine, but the Bobcats answered with seven straight points to match their biggest lead of the contest at 40-24 with 15:22 left. GC & SU would lead by as many as 20 points before TC rallied to cut the margin in half late.
Trailing 56-36 with 4:55 left, the Pioneers mounted a 15-4 run to cut the lead to 60-51 with 44 seconds left. Lindsey Haggerty canned a pair of shots in the final 36 seconds, however to quell any hopes of a comeback as the Bobcats finished off the 12-point win.
In addition to Driskell's 25, GC & SU got 12 points off the bench from Tiauna Brantley. Lindsey Smith collected eight steals as the Bobcats forced 25 TC turnovers in the game. GC & SU shot 46 percent in the second half to finish at 43.3 percent overall.
Chassity Martin came off the bench to tally 10 points and was the only Pioneer player in double figures on the day. Lindsay Barta added nine points and four blocked shots, while Shantae Shank added eight points. TC shot 36.5 percent overall and went just 6-23 from three-point range.
Tusculum returns to action on Wednesday as they host Presbyterian, while GC & SU will also return to the floor on Wednesday as they travel to Armstrong Atlantic State for a Peach Belt Conference matchup.

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Combining a stingy defense with the seventh double-double of the season for junior Marquita Driskell (Milledgeville, Ga./Baldwin/Univ. of Georgia), the Georgia College & State University women’s basketball team (8-2) beat Tuskegee University (2-4) 60-53 today (Dec. 29) in day one of the CSU Holiday Classic, hosted by Columbus State University.
The two-day tournament features GCSU, TU, CSU and Tusculum College.
Driskell posted game-bests with 15 points and 10 boards, but it was the 34-to-20 advantage in caused turnovers that the Lady Bobcats used most for the win. Juniors Lindsey Smith (Decatur, Ga./Dunwoody) and Elicia Lynch (Semmes, Ala./Mary G. Montgomery/Faulkner State C.C.) each reached double figure points at 12 and 11, respectively, with Lynch’s coming in a reserve role.
GCSU shot a paltry 25.7 percent (9-of-35) in the first half, but found the mark in the second stanza, good for 11-of-24 from the field (.458).
After GCSU took the lead for good at the 14:08 mark in the second half on a bucket by Cassie Miliner (Warner Robins, Ga./Warner Robins/Univ. of Central Florida), they went on a quick 14-0 run over the next five minutes, getting seven during the stretch from Smith.
The Golden Tigers cut the lead to four on a couple of occasions later in the contest, but never got the advantage back. Leading the way for TU was Aisha Johnson with 15 points, but the junior guard also had 10 turnovers.
The Lady Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. in day two of the tournament against Tusculum (8-1). The Pioneers played CSU today.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic hit five straight three-pointers inthe first half to spark the Pirates to a 74-64 win over Southern Arkansas in the first day of the 2006 SpringHill Suites Midtown New Year Classic on Friday evening at Alumni Arena. In the day's first game, GCSU held off Ferris State, 68-61.
The Pirates (8-2) took a five-point lead into halftime against the Muleriders (5-6), then opened the second half on a 20-6 run to take control of the contest. Patrick Sanou led the Pirates with 14 points and six rebounds as 12 different AASU players found the scoring column on the night. Bryan Taylor added nine points and seven rebounds, while Southern Arkansas was led by Brandon Bealer's 14 points. AASU outrebounded the Muleriders, 44-27, and went to the free throw line 44 times - a new high for Pirates in the Jeff Burkhamer era.
In the first game, GCSU (9-1) used an 11-2 run midway through the second half to break open a one-point game and hold on against Ferris State (3-8). The Bobcats placed four players in double figures, led by Levert Carter's double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Shaun Keaton added 15 points off the bench. Aaron Clark also contributed adouble-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Shejdie Childs added a rare double-double for point guards with 11 points and 10 assists.Ferris State got a game-high 24 points from Terrance Shaw, who hit 9-of-17 shots from the floor, including 3-of-8 three-pointers, to gowith his nine rebounds and four steals.

Columbus, GA - Columbus State withstood a barrage of three-point shots and dominated the boards in taking a 74-69 win over Tusculum in the CSU Women's Holiday Classic here Friday. CSU moves to 7-3 on the season with the win, while Tusculum sees its three-game win streak snapped and falls to 8-2 overall.
Cherwonna Walker and Shanrika Hardeman each posted a double-double for the Lady Cougars in the game. Walker led all scorers with 25 points to go with 10 boards, while Hardeman tallied 11 points, but pulled down a phenomenal 20 rebounds. CSU held a 62-21 advantage on the boards for the game.
Tusculum put up 39 three-point attempts in the game - over half of its total shot attempts - but made good on only 12 of those bombs for 30.8 percent. The Pioneers used the three-point shot to build as much as nine point lead in the first half, but each time TC made a run, CSU answered.
Trailing 18-11 after a Ashli Olive triple, the Lady Cougars mounted a 12-0 run to take the lead by five at 23-18. Erin Holder capped the run with a three-pointer - ironically the only trey of the game for CSU - at the 8:46 mark. Tusculum answered right back, however, running off on a 16-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game. Diana Neves scored 11 of her team's 16 points during the run with nine of those coming via the three-pointer. Her layup with 4:31 left in the half made it 34-25. CSU closed the half with a 12-2 run and took a 37-36 lead into the break. The Pioneers committed four turnovers down the stretch to allow CSU to claw its way back on top.
The Lady Cougars out-scored TC 16-7 over the first seven-plus minutes of the second half to take the first - and only - double-digit lead by either team in the contest. A Hardeman layup with 12:37 left made it 53-43 at that point. Tusculum could never get closer than four points the rest of the way as the perimeter shots would not fall. The Pioneers went 4-15 in the second half from long range and shot just 36.4 percent overall in the period.

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern hit a school-record 75 percent from three-point range, hitting 12 of 16 three-pointers, in downing Armstrong Atlantic State, 93-81, on Wednesday evening in Lakeland.
The Mocs (3-5) avenged an earlier-season loss to the Pirates (7-2) on a night where they could not miss from long distance. Florida Southern went 7-of-8 from three-point range in the first half to build a 41-31 lead at halftime. AASU would rally in the second half, cutting the lead to just three, 70-67, but the Pirates could get no closer.
Rob Eldridge led a quintet of Mocs in double figures with a game-high 20 points, while Andrei Grant added 19 on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor.Florida Southern, as a team, hit 57.1 percent from the floor (32-of-56). AASU WOMEN EDGE LENOIR-RHYNE
Women’s College Basketball: AASU 69, Lenoir-Rhyne 66
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior Kaneetha Gordon’s career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds helped the Armstrong Atlantic women’s basketball squad snap a three-game losing streak and pick up a 69-66 win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday night at Alumni Arena in Savannah.
The Lady Pirates (4-3) jumped out to a 31-16 lead in the first half and led by as many as 14 points midway through the second half, but Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2) climbed back into the contest, eventually tying the game at 6-1-all on a Jami Safrit jumper with 4:01 remaining in the contest.
Gordon then converted a three-point play to put the Lady Pirates back up by three, 64-61, only to watch Lenoir-Rhyne take a one-point lead with under a minute remaining on Jacquelyn Kremer’s basket that made the score 66-65. SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior Kaneetha Gordon’s career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds helped the Armstrong Atlantic women’s basketball squad snap a three-game losing streak and pick up a 69-66 win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday night at Alumni Arena in Savannah.
The Lady Pirates (4-3) jumped out to a 31-16 lead in the first half and led by as many as 14 points midway through the second half, but Lenoir-Rhyne (3-2) climbed back into the contest, eventually tying the game at 6-1-all on a Jami Safrit jumper with 4:01 remaining in the contest.
Gordon then converted a three-point play to put the Lady Pirates back up by three, 64-61, only to watch Lenoir-Rhyne take a one-point lead with under a minute remaining on Jacquelyn Kremer’s basket that made the score 66-65. GC&SU MEN'S BASKETBALL SUFFERS FIRST LOSS
CLINTON, SC – The Georgia College & State University men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday evening in Clinton, SC, falling to the Blue Hose of Presbyterian 71-58. The strong shooting of Friday night failed to show as the Blue Hose (5-1) jumped in front of the Bobcats (6-1) early in the first half and never gave up the lead.
Presbyterian’s Grant Herren made a jumper at the 18:01 mark, putting the Blue Hose up 4-2. Apparently, that was all they needed, as they kept the lead for the rest of the game. Presbyterian went into halftime up 31-23 thanks to several five point runs in the first half. In the second half, it would be more of the same, with the Blue Hose leading by as much as 21 points. The Bobcats would make a late run, battling back from 21 points down to within seven. The drive began at the 7:38 mark and was capped with 1:14 left to play by an Aaron Clark lay-up. But, with less than a minute to play, the Blue Hose would drain nine free-throws to ice the victory.
Leading the Bobcat offense was Aaron Clark with a game-high 18 points, three boards, and an assist. Shaun Keaton had 13 points, four boards, and two dishes. Shejdie Childs added ten points, one board, and two assists. The defensive effort was led by Levert Carter with three blocks, and Keaton with three steals. Clark also had two blocks and a steal, and Childs had two steals. The Blue Hose offense was led by Sean Dixon with 15 points, two boards, and five assists. Martynas Versinskas added 13 points, nine boards, and three dishes. Defensively, Versinskas had two blocks and Pat Kiscaden had two steals.
For the game, the Bobcats shot just 35.2% (19-54) from the floor and a dismal 16.7% (2-12) from three-point range, but managed a respectable 72.0% (18-25) from the free-throw line. The Blue Hose shot 45.1% (23-51) from the floor, 37.5% (6-16) from behind the arc, and a solid 86.4% (19-22) from the stripe.
GCSU will face Presbyterian in its next match-up on Wednesday, Decemeber 13, at 7:30pm in Milledgeville.

Analysis: The GSC will play with two fewer schools this season, as Central Arkansas has left for the NCAA Division I ranks, while Lincoln Memorial has moved to the South Atlantic Conference. Still, many of the so-called "experts" think Montevallo could win their third conference title in the last four seasons. In the West Division, Harding was the surprise favorite to finish on top there, followed by Arkansas-Monticello and Delta State.

Also, don't count out Armstrong Atlantic State, Columbus State, or outgoing USC Upstate either. The Spartans will depart for the D-I ranks after this season. FALL SPORTS POSTSEASON UPDATE
After winning both the Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II South Central Regional titles, the University of North Alabama volleyball team moved to one step closer to playing a national championship Friday, as the nationally sixth-ranked Lions downed tenth-ranked Ashland (Ohio) 3-0 to advance to Saturday's national semifinal. UNA will play the winner of the Lock Haven-West Texas A&M match this weekend at Pensacola, Fla.

Like the old saying goes, it might be late, but better late than never, as D-II South Sports has the first of multiple installments of its 2006-2007 basketball preview. Leading things off are the women's teams in the Gulf South Conference.

Valdosta State: After finishing 18-10 last season, and falling to Henderson State in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference tournament, the Lady Blazers hope to return to the top of the GSC East this year. The VSU women will be tested early and often, as they face squads such as Nova Southeastern, Florida Gulf Coast, Clayton State, and Bowie State in the pre-conference schedule.
Alabama-Huntsville: The Lady Chargers hope to take another step towards being one of the conference's elite programs after a 14-13 overall, and 9-5 finish in GSC East action last season. UAH saw its season end with an embarassing 52-28 loss to Delta State in the GSC tournament.
West Florida: The Lady Argonauts look to make a return trip to the NCAA Division II tournament after finishing 23-7 last season, falling to Henderson State in the South regional semifinal. But they'll have to do it with the multitude of seniors that got them there now having graduated.
West Georgia: After finishing 19-10 in their final season as the Braves, the UWG women will begin their first season as the Wolves.
West Alabama: The Lady Tigers hope to improve on a disappointing 13-16 record, which included a 7-7 mark in GSC East games.

FALL SPORTS POSTSEASON UPDATE
In case you missed it, here's how some of the postseason action turned out for some of the fall sports teams in D-II South Nation.
Getting things underway on the soccer field, both University of West Florida squads played for the opportunity to advance to the national quarterfinals, with the men's team playing in the NCAA Division II soccer version of the "Elite Eight" for the first time ever, as the Argonauts downed Lynn University 2-1 in the South Regional final last Sunday. The Argos (19-1-2) will host Queens University (N.C.) in Saturday's quarterfinal round match at 4 p.m. CST. As for the UWF women, however, it was anything but a happy ending, as the Argonauts fell to nationally fifth-ranked Tampa 2-0. The loss snapped an 11-match unbeaten streak for West Florida, ending its season with 15-3-3 mark.
The news wasn't all bad for UWF athletics, though, as the volleyball team, in its first-ever NCAA
tournament appearance, upset second-seeded Washburn in a three-game sweep (30-25, 30-27, 30-25) in the South Central Regional Thursday. The seventh-seeded Argos will face third-seeded Central Missouri State in Friday's second round action at Kirksville, Mo. Friday.
In other volleyball postseason action, the Lady Pacers of USC Aiken won the Peach Belt Conference tournament over Armstrong Atlantic State last Saturday, but saw their run in the NCAA tournament come to an abrupt end at 28-7, as Florida Gulf Coast swept USCA 3-0. FGCU is in its final season of NCAA Division II action, and will join former PBC members Kennesaw State, North Florida, and USC Upstate in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007.

2006-07 BASKETBALL PREVIEW--OPENING TIP
NOTE: D-II South Sports starts its third season of basketball coverage with a brief look at the Disney Division II Tip-Off classic this weekend. A preview of the Gulf South and Peach Belt Conferences, as well as the SIAC, will soon follow. So, sit back, and enjoy!

After going 23-4 overall, 19-1 in Peach Belt Conference play, and winning the regular season title in your inaugural season of the league, what do the Lady Saints of North Georgia College & State University do for an encore? Play a tougher schedule. That's what head coach Buffie Burson and her squad will do this weekend, as the Lady Saints travel to Orlando, Fla. for the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic.
The North Georgia women will open the classic against preseason #1 North Dakota Friday, followed by Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday, and wrapping up with a game against Lock Haven (Pa.) Sunday. The Lady Saints return six letterwinners from last season, but have no seniors.

NCAA SOCCER TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS ANNOUNCED
The selections for the 2006 NCAA Division II soccer championships have been announced, and once again, D-II South Nation is well represented, as both the Gulf South and Peach Belt Conferences sent a combined seven teams to regional competition starting Friday.
In the women's bracket, the PBC sent tournament champion Columbus State and runner-up Armstrong Atlantic State to the Southeast Regional, while West Florida was the lone GSC squad to advance to the South Regional. CSU and AASU are both making their first-ever appearances in the NCAA tournament.
On the men's side, PBC regular-season and tournament champion Lander joins soon to be former PBC foe USC Upstate in the Southeast Regional, which the Bearcats will host, while UWF will battle fellow GSC rival Montevallo in a first round match in the South Regional at Pensacola, Fla.
Here are the pairings for the Southeast and South Regionals as follows. Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are marked in BOLD type.

WEST FLORIDA SWEEPS GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE SOCCER TITLES

Sunday was a very good day to be a University of West Florida Argonaut, at least on the soccer field, as both the men's and women's soccer teams swept the championship matches of the Gulf South Cofnerence tournament at Pensacola, Fla.
The top-seeded UWF women, who are currently ranked 11th in the nation, edged Ouachita Baptist 1-0, while the UWF men, also a top seed going into the GSC tournament, as well as the nation's fifth-ranked team at the NCAA Division II level, won its fourth straight tourney title with a 4-1 rout over third-seeded Montevallo in the men's title match.

HAT TRICK!--LANDER WINS THIRD STRAIGHT PBC MEN'S SOCCER TITLE
The Bearcats of Lander University reign supreme once again in the Peach Belt Conference men's soccer tournament, as they downed USC-Aiken 1-0 to win their straight tournament title.
