As Christmas approaches, let's take one last look at the fall sports season in D-II South Nation for 2008...
Volleyball: Armstrong Atlantic State made history, as the Lady Pirates advanced to the Elite Eight for the first-time ever this season. But their run was cut short in the national quarterfinals by Grand Valley State in a three-game sweep. West Florida also had a historic run in the South Regional, reaching the Sweet 16 before falling to Nova Southeastern in five games. As for eight-time SIAC champion Albany State, the Lady Rams were swept by the University of Tampa despite winning a school record 31 matches.
Women's Soccer: Despite being the lone Gulf South Conference team in the dance, the University of West Florida Lady Argonauts reached the national finals, but lost to Seattle Pacific in double overtime, 1-0. One of the teams the Lady Argonauts defeated en route to the title match was Columbus State, which was one of three teams (Georgia College & State University and UNC Pembroke were the others) from the Peach Belt Conference to advance to the NCAA Division II tournament. UWF edged CSU 1-0 in the national quarterfinals on Nov. 23.
Men's Soccer: It was a disappointing run for the three teams that represented D-II South Nation in that sport's NCAA tournament in 2008. In the South Regional bracket, West Florida and Montevallo both suffered bitter season-ending to Sunshine State Conference foes Lynn and Tampa, respectively. The Argos lost to the Knights 5-2, while the Falcons fell to the Spartans, 1-0. It wasn't much better for the Peach Belt Conference, either, as that league's only representative, the Lander Bearcats, were eliminated by Limestone, 2-1.

Fall Sports Update--November 14, 2008
The regular season is over. Postseason play has arrived for the fall sports in D-II South Nation. In fact, NCAA tournament action is already underway in both men's and women's soccer respectively, as well as conference tournament play in volleyball.
NCAA Division II Women's Soccer
The Peach Belt Conference is well represented in the Southeast Regional, as three teams, including No. 1 seed, have advanced to the big dance in D-II. Georgia College & State University makes its first-ever NCAA appearance, while UNC Pembroke also looks to make a big splash!
In the South bracket, the University of West Florida is the lone team from D-II South Nation to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament, as all of the other squads come from the Sunshine State Conference.

Fall Sports Update--Soccer
Like the old saying goes, "it's late, but better late than never".
As the regular season winds down, and conference tournament play heats up, let's take a brief at how the postseason pairings are shaping up in soccer.
Gulf South Women: It's been a two-team race between West Florida (7-0 GSC) and Montevallo (6-0-1 GSC) all season long. It all comes down to one match on Friday, Oct. 31, between the Falcons and the Argonauts, who are currently ranked No. 2 in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
Gulf South Men: The race for the GSC men's regular season title also has involved UWF and UM, as the Falcons will put their perfect 5-0 conference mark on the line against the Argonauts, who are ranked 18th in the NSCAA poll. Christian Brothers is 4-1 in GSC games, with one match remaining against Alabama-Huntsville (Oct. 29).

Pétursdóttir Puts In Overtime Winner In 2-1 Pirate Victory
MORROW, Ga. - Freshman Þórdís Pétursdóttir delivered the game-winner inovertime as the Armstrong Atlantic State women's soccer team won itsPeach Belt Conference opener, 2-1, over host Clayton State on Saturdayevening in Morrow, Ga.
The Pirates (4-2-1, 1-0 PBC) - playing an 11-on-9 advantage after Clayton State had its second player sent off with a red card in the closing moments of the first overtime period - finally broke through inthe 104th minute as junior Kristin Burton's cross found the foot of Pétursdóttir, who beat Laker goalkeeper Whitney Jowers for the winner.
Burton opened the scoring in the match in the 29th minute as sheconverted a penalty kick to put the Pirates up, 1-0. Clayton State (0-7,0-1 PBC) equalized in the 59th minute as Caitlin Clark drilled a shotfrom 35 yards out to tie things up at 1-1. The score would remaindeadlocked at 1-all at the end of regulation, despite the Pirates holding a 22-5 edge in shots.
AASU held the Lakers without a shot in the overtimes, while registering six in the first overtime and two in the second. The Pirates also enjoyed a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Pirate goalkeeper Tracey Mitchell played the entire match in net forAASU, giving up the lone goal and facing just five shots. Laker starting goalkeeper Chelsea Bettis played 62 minutes, making seven saves and giving up one goal. Jowers played 42 minutes and made two saves.
Burton finished the night with nine shots, four on goal, including thepenalty kick that was her PBC-leading sixth goal of the season. Eleven different Pirates notched shots on the night and the win was the first for AASU on the road this season in four matches.
AASU returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, as the Pirates host No.8-ranked UNC Pembroke at 5:00 p.m. at AT&T Field.

The Pirates (10-4) jumped out to a quick lead after the first two gamesby hitting .486 against the Wildcats (6-6), but Fort Valley State rebounded to take game three with a 15-kill, .313 percentage performance. AASU closed out the match in a tight fourth game, thanks in large part to Wildcat service errors - Fort Valley State had 16 serviceerrors in the match and five in the fourth game alone.
Junior Michele Remlinger hit .421 with 10 kills to lead the Pirates offensively, while freshman Casie Richards added 10 kills and threeblocks. Junior setter Hannah Segebart tallied 28 assists and freshman Casey Howett notched 11 digs.Fort Valley State was led by Raven WynnRynn's match-high 14 kills, while Sheriann Norris added 24 assists, seven kills and seven digs.

GSW soccer fighting growing pains
Here it is, the 500th post at D-II South Sports! The Georgia Southwestern State University soccer programs are struggling to adjust to the competition in the Peach Belt Conference, as both the Hurricanes and Lady Hurricanes begin their first full year of membership at the NCAA Division II level.

Lady Cougars Post Shutout in Season Opener at Barry

Miami Shores, FL - Columbus State scratched out two first-half goals and then rode its customary strong defense the rest of the way Friday in a season-opening 2-0 win over Barry University. CSU, ranked #5 in the NFCA Division II preseason poll, will conclude its Florida road trip with a game at Rollins College on Sunday.
Host Barry controlled possession early in the contest, but CSU mounted a run in the ninth minute and a crossing pass from Kellie Myles found the head of Jill Walthall in the box and the sophomore poked the shot past Buccaneer keeper Sami Cromartie for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Cougars got a second goal in the 16th minute when Cromartie could not control a ball in the box. Stephanie Parris was there to collect the loose ball and booted into the empty net for a 2-0 lead. That score would stand the rest of the way as CSU relied on its defense to post the shutout.
The best scoring opportunity for Barry came in the 18th minute as Michelle Tarasiuk slipped a shot past Monica Sanchez, but defender Sarah Hawkins was on the spot to sweep the shot away near the goal for an empty net save. Sanchez played the first half in goal and posted two saves, while Kelly Nimmo took over in the second half and collected four saves to preserve the shutout win.
"It was not that pretty, but a win is good any way you get it," said CSU coach Jay Entlich. "It hurt us to not have had a preseason scrimmage to get game experience. It was sort of like a football team practicing in shorts and then putting on the pads to play a game - that first hit gives you a jolt. We were fortunate enough to get a couple of goals and come away with a win."
CSU committed 15 fouls in the game, including one yellow card issued to Hawkins in the 74th minute. Barry had eight fouls and picked up two yellow cards in the first half. CSU led in corner kicks by a 6-5 count.
CSU (1-0) returns to action on Sunday as they stop over in Winter Park, FL, to face Rollins College at noon.

2008 Fall Sports Preview--Peach Belt Conference
Our 2008 fall sports previews continues with the outlook on the Peach Belt Conference. So, what are waiting for? Let's get started!
Volleyball: Despite a second place finish (6-4 in 2007) in PBC play last year, Lander was selected to finish first out of six teams in this year's regular season race. Armstrong Atlantic State and two-time defending regular season and tournament champion USC Aiken also figure to find themselves in the mix for the top spot in PBC volleyball in 2008.

CATCHING UP
Again, sorry for the lack of updates on this blog. Still, with the fall sports regular season winding down, it's a good time to take a look at what's happened in D-II South Nation since the last entry. So, without any further ado, let's go!
VOLLEYBALL
Gulf South Conference: There may be a change at the top in the East Division, as West Florida (25-4, 8-0 GSC East as of Oct. 26), has been in first place for much of the season. Still, North Alabama (17-13, 7-2) has managed to put together a decent showing in conference matches, despite its mediocre overall record. West Alabama (25-3, 7-2) and West Georgia (22-10, 4-5) have also been pleasant surprises.
In the West, it has basically been a two-team race all year, as Henderson State (20-8, 9-1 GSC) and Harding (22-8, 9-1) have been the top two squads in that division. Arkansas Tech (21-11, 7-3) hopes to makes a serious push for a higher seed should the Golden Suns win their final two matches.
Peach Belt Conference: USC Aiken (19-4, 5-0 PBC) is in the driver's seat heading into the stretch run, with matches against second place Lander (19-7, 3-2), and third-place Armstrong Atlantic State (14-17, 4-3) still to come. The Pacers do battle with the Bearcats on Oct. 31, and the Pirates on Nov. 3, both at home.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Gulf South Conference: It's been a three-team race for the GSC regular season title between West Florida (12-2, 7-0), Montevallo (11-6, 6-1), and Ouachita Baptist (12-2-2, 6-1). A fourth team, Harding (9-7-1, 4-2-1), has already clinched the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. But UWF can clinch the top seed with a win over UM Friday night (Oct. 26). An Argonaut loss to Montevallo, though, opens the door to a three-way for first place should OBU defeat HU Friday.
Peach Belt Conference: In its just its fourth season, Columbus State (13-3-1, 7-0) can win the regular season title outright if they can defeat Georgia College & State University (12-3, 5-2) Saturday. Don't count out Lander (12-3, 6-1) and Armstrong Atlantic State (11-3-1, 5-1-1) as serious contenders to win the conference tournament, though.

Gulf South Conference: It's been a three-team race for the GSC regular season title between West Florida (12-2, 7-0), Montevallo (11-6, 6-1), and Ouachita Baptist (12-2-2, 6-1). A fourth team, Harding (9-7-1, 4-2-1), has already clinched the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. But UWF can clinch the top seed with a win over UM Friday night (Oct. 26). An Argonaut loss to Montevallo, though, opens the door to a three-way for first place should OBU defeat HU Friday.
Peach Belt Conference: In its just its fourth season, Columbus State (13-3-1, 7-0) can win the regular season title outright if they can defeat Georgia College & State University (12-3, 5-2) Saturday. Don't count out Lander (12-3, 6-1) and Armstrong Atlantic State (11-3-1, 5-1-1) as serious contenders to win the conference tournament, though.

Georgia College Soccer Announces 2007 Slate
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.—The Georgia College & State University Department of Athletics and head soccer coach Robert Parr have announced the 2007 schedule for the Bobcat women’s soccer program.
The schedule features nine home dates at Bobcat Field on GCSU’s West Campus, six of which coming in October. The Bobcats have five exhibition contests, thanks to a rare three-game set in the Bahamas .
The GCSU soccer team will make its first trek to the Bahamas , playing games Aug. 7-9. The trip benefits the Bobcats on many levels, helping the 13 newcomers bond with the class of returning players, playing some outstanding young competition in teams from the College of the Bahamas , the Bahamas Select IX and Cavalier FC programs, and adding a morale boost to training camp.
After those three dates, GCSU hosts Division I Georgia Southern University Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. for another exhibition before hitting the road. SCAD provides the final exhibition, leading into a three-game road stretch to start the season. Thomas University opens the regular season Saturday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m., followed by Montevallo University the next day at 1 p.m. CT. The Bobcats travel to the University of North Alabama Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. CT before beginning the Peach Belt Conference slate at home.

GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN NAMES NEW MEN'S SOCCER COACH
Georgia Southwestern State University will begin its second season of Peach Belt Conference play with a new head coach for its men's soccer program.
Warren Russ, who helped start the women's soccer program at the University of Georgia in 1995, was named the Hurricanes head coach Monday. He replaces Barry Kaplan, who remains at GSW as the women's soccer head coach.

Lakers to play nine road contests this season, including two NCAA Tournament teams
MORROW, Ga. – May 25, 2007 – The Willie Nelson classic "On the Road Again" is the perfect theme for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team in 2007. Head coach T.O. Totty officially released the schedule on Friday, and nine of the Lakers’ 16 regular season games this upcoming season are away from Laker Field.
In fact, after the season opener at home against Gulf South Conference contender Alabama-Huntsville on Aug. 24, Clayton State will play five straight road games. The Lakers are coming off a 2006 season in which they finished 10-8 overall and third place in the Peach Belt Conference at 7-2.
"As usual, I feel we have put together a competitive schedule that will challenge our team," said Totty, who is 85-71-11 entering his 10th season at Clayton State. "We are looking forward to another successful season."
As far as the Peach Belt Conference is concerned, the two biggest games of the season are back-to-back in mid-September when Clayton State travels to Armstrong Atlantic on Sept. 15, and then plays host to Columbus State on Sept. 19. Columbus State is the defending Peach Belt regular season and tournament champion, and both the Lady Cougars and Armstrong Atlantic went 18-4-1 last season, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
In addition to Armstrong Atlantic and Columbus State, Clayton State also has conference road match-ups at USC Aiken on Sept. 22, Georgia Southwestern on Oct. 13 and Lander to close out the regular season on Oct. 20. The Lakers have conference home games against UNC-Pembroke on Sept. 29, North Georgia on Oct. 6 and Georgia College on Oct. 17.
Unlike last season, when all of Clayton State’s non-conference games were against teams from the South Atlantic Conference, Totty has spread the non-conference slate out a little for this season.

This will mark the first ever meeting in women’s soccer between Clayton State and West Georgia, which started its program in 2004.

COLUMBUS STATE SOCCER SIGNS EIGHT PLAYERS
Columbus, GA - Columbus State women's soccer coach Jay Entlich has announced the signing of eight players for the 2007 season. The players completed the signing of National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the national signing day for fall sports. Seven of the eight are from Georgia, while the eighth is from nearby Auburn, AL. Entlich is entering his fourth season as CSU coach and will have his first class of seniors in 2007 after starting the program from scratch four years ago.
"I am very pleased with the young ladies we have signed," said Entlich. "We have addressed our needs for the team and have brought in a group of players that are not only strong on the field, but in the classroom as well. We are definitely looking for these young ladies to step in right away and have an impact on our team in 2007.
Here is a list of the eight signees with a capsule of information on each:
KC MacEachern- (Fr., Augusta, GA., Aquinas HS) KC comes to CSU from Aquinas High School and the Augusta Arsenal Gunners soccer club. She is a very talented forward and attacking midfielder. KC has been a 4 year starter for her high school team and she has also lettered in volleyball, swimming, and basketball. Jessica Woodson- (Fr., Conyers, GA., Rockdale HS) Jessica’s ability to score goals in the box and play with her back to goal will make her a valuable addition to the Lady Cougars in 2007. She comes to CSU after a very successful career on the field playing at Rockdale County High School, high school teammate of current CSU midfielder Lindsey Morgan, and playing her club soccer at AFC Lightning.
Jill Walthall- (Fr., Clarkston, GA., Chamblee HS) Jill comes to CSU and is expected to provide an immediate impact in the midfield for the Lady Cougars. She is the younger sister of current standout forward Rachel Walthall. Jill is an outstanding student from the Chamblee High School Magnet program. Jill played her club soccer for Atlanta Fire United Elite.
Leslie Mathews- (Fr., Stone Mountain, GA., Columbia HS) Leslie has a very rich playing background coming to CSU from the highly successful GSA Phoenix Red 90. Her club team has participated in the US Youth Soccer Southern Regional Tournament for three straight years. Coach Entlich looks for Leslie to contribute either as a forward or outside midfielder.
Melinda Bush- (Fr., Columbus, GA., Hardaway HS) Melinda looks to be one of the most talented and most athletic recruits that Coach Entlich has signed from the Columbus area. She has had a very successful career playing locally at Hardaway High School and for CFC Redstar. She has helped lead her team to numerous region titles and state playoff appearances. Coach Entlich expects Melinda to contribute in a variety of roles.
Sarah Schwartz- (Fr., Auburn, AL., Auburn HS) Sarah is CSU’s lone out of state signee for the 2007 signing class. She comes over to Columbus from Auburn High School in Auburn, Alabama and has played club soccer for American Lady Jets out of Birmingham. Sarah can play as an outside midfielder or forward within the current system Coach Entlich employs with his team.
Kim Gaughan- (Fr., Marietta, GA., McEachern HS) Much like some of CSU’s other recruits, Kim also has connections to the current team. She was high school teammates with current standout midfielder Hilary Holder. Kim will provide depth to the Lady Cougars backline or as a defensive midfielder. Kim is an excellent defender who will bring a strong physical presence to the back. Kim plays her club soccer for the nationally recognized Concorde Fire Soccer Club in Atlanta.
Stephanie Parrish- (Fr., Grayson, GA., Grayson HS) Stephanie is CSU’s second signee of the 2007 class from GSA in Lilburn, GA. Stephanie plays for the GSA 89 Phoenix Red and at Grayson High School. Stephanie will bring tremendous speed and athleticism and could potentially step into a variety of valuable roles in Coach Entlich’s system of play.

"I am very pleased with the young ladies we have signed," said Entlich. "We have addressed our needs for the team and have brought in a group of players that are not only strong on the field, but in the classroom as well. We are definitely looking for these young ladies to step in right away and have an impact on our team in 2007.
