Remembering the 2008 Fall Sports Season
As Christmas approaches, let's take one last look at the fall sports season in D-II South Nation for 2008...
Volleyball: Armstrong Atlantic State made history, as the Lady Pirates advanced to the Elite Eight for the first-time ever this season. But their run was cut short in the national quarterfinals by Grand Valley State in a three-game sweep. West Florida also had a historic run in the South Regional, reaching the Sweet 16 before falling to Nova Southeastern in five games. As for eight-time SIAC champion Albany State, the Lady Rams were swept by the University of Tampa despite winning a school record 31 matches.
Women's Soccer: Despite being the lone Gulf South Conference team in the dance, the University of West Florida Lady Argonauts reached the national finals, but lost to Seattle Pacific in double overtime, 1-0. One of the teams the Lady Argonauts defeated en route to the title match was Columbus State, which was one of three teams (Georgia College & State University and UNC Pembroke were the others) from the Peach Belt Conference to advance to the NCAA Division II tournament. UWF edged CSU 1-0 in the national quarterfinals on Nov. 23.

Fall Sports Update--November 14, 2008
The regular season is over. Postseason play has arrived for the fall sports in D-II South Nation. In fact, NCAA tournament action is already underway in both men's and women's soccer respectively, as well as conference tournament play in volleyball.

The Peach Belt Conference is well represented in the Southeast Regional, as three teams, including No. 1 seed, have advanced to the big dance in D-II. Georgia College & State University makes its first-ever NCAA appearance, while UNC Pembroke also looks to make a big splash!

Fall Sports Update--Soccer
Like the old saying goes, "it's late, but better late than never".
As the regular season winds down, and conference tournament play heats up, let's take a brief at how the postseason pairings are shaping up in soccer.
Gulf South Women: It's been a two-team race between West Florida (7-0 GSC) and Montevallo (6-0-1 GSC) all season long. It all comes down to one match on Friday, Oct. 31, between the Falcons and the Argonauts, who are currently ranked No. 2 in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
Gulf South Men: The race for the GSC men's regular season title also has involved UWF and UM, as the Falcons will put their perfect 5-0 conference mark on the line against the Argonauts, who are ranked 18th in the NSCAA poll. Christian Brothers is 4-1 in GSC games, with one match remaining against Alabama-Huntsville (Oct. 29).
Peach Belt Women: The PBC is well represented in the national ranking, with Columbus State ranked fourth, UNC Pembroke ninth, and Georgia College & State University 21st. A win over either Georgia Southwestern State or GC&SU would all but wrap up the top seed for the upcoming PBC tournament.

GSW soccer fighting growing pains
Here it is, the 500th post at D-II South Sports! The Georgia Southwestern State University soccer programs are struggling to adjust to the competition in the Peach Belt Conference, as both the Hurricanes and Lady Hurricanes begin their first full year of membership at the NCAA Division II level.

2008 Fall Sports Preview--Peach Belt Conference
Our 2008 fall sports previews continues with the outlook on the Peach Belt Conference. So, what are waiting for? Let's get started!
Volleyball: Despite a second place finish (6-4 in 2007) in PBC play last year, Lander was selected to finish first out of six teams in this year's regular season race. Armstrong Atlantic State and two-time defending regular season and tournament champion USC Aiken also figure to find themselves in the mix for the top spot in PBC volleyball in 2008.

Instead, that nod goes to the University of West Florida, whose Argonauts are coming off a successful 26-4 campaign, and was picked to win the East Division in 2008. In the West, Harding is team to beat, as the Lady Bisons hope to win their seventh straight division crown.

CATCHING UP
Again, sorry for the lack of updates on this blog. Still, with the fall sports regular season winding down, it's a good time to take a look at what's happened in D-II South Nation since the last entry. So, without any further ado, let's go!
VOLLEYBALL
Gulf South Conference: There may be a change at the top in the East Division, as West Florida (25-4, 8-0 GSC East as of Oct. 26), has been in first place for much of the season. Still, North Alabama (17-13, 7-2) has managed to put together a decent showing in conference matches, despite its mediocre overall record. West Alabama (25-3, 7-2) and West Georgia (22-10, 4-5) have also been pleasant surprises.
In the West, it has basically been a two-team race all year, as Henderson State (20-8, 9-1 GSC) and Harding (22-8, 9-1) have been the top two squads in that division. Arkansas Tech (21-11, 7-3) hopes to makes a serious push for a higher seed should the Golden Suns win their final two matches.
Peach Belt Conference: USC Aiken (19-4, 5-0 PBC) is in the driver's seat heading into the stretch run, with matches against second place Lander (19-7, 3-2), and third-place Armstrong Atlantic State (14-17, 4-3) still to come. The Pacers do battle with the Bearcats on Oct. 31, and the Pirates on Nov. 3, both at home.

Ouachita Baptist, West Georgia, Montevallo, and Alabama-Huntsville could also figure into the race for the four spots in the conference tournament.

Once again, UNA is the team to beat in the GSC East this season, and Lions hope to add a 17th conference title, not to mention a return trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four this season. Don't count out UWF, though, as the Argonauts are coming off their first-ever NCAA tourmanent appearance from last season.
In the GSC West, Harding once again will be the hunted, while the HSU Lady Reddies hope to derail the Bisons quest for yet another division title. HU has won the GSC West title five years in a row.

After earning a berth in the NCAA Division II South Regional in 2006, losing to Tampa in the finals, UWF hopes to go one step further in 2007, and advance to at least the national quarterfinals.
However, the Argos could be facing stiff competition in the GSC, as Harding received two first-place in being picked to finish second in the preseason coaches poll. Ouachita Baptist, West Georgia, Montevallo, and Alabama-Huntsville could also figure into the race for the four spots in the conference tournament.

After coming off a D-II Final Four appearance a year ago, the Argonauts (20-1-3 in '06) hope to take another step, and win a national championship. But Montevallo might have a say in who finishes on top in the GSC, as the Falcons were picked to finish second by the coaches, despite receiving only one first-place vote. CBU and UAH are definite sleepers to sneak up on either UWF, UM, or both.

GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN NAMES NEW MEN'S SOCCER COACH
Georgia Southwestern State University will begin its second season of Peach Belt Conference play with a new head coach for its men's soccer program.
Warren Russ, who helped start the women's soccer program at the University of Georgia in 1995, was named the Hurricanes head coach Monday. He replaces Barry Kaplan, who remains at GSW as the women's soccer head coach.

Petersen releases 2007 Clayton State men’s soccer schedule
Lakers to play 13 regional contests this season, including three NCAA Tournament teams
MORROW, Ga. – May 24, 2007 – Last season, the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team played arguably one of the toughest schedules in all of NCAA Division II – and still won the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship.
This season, head coach Pete Petersen is not letting up with the 2007 schedule, which was released on Friday. This season, the Lakers will play 13 games within the Southeast Region of Division II, and that includes three teams that advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament last season.
“We probably had one of the toughest schedules in the land last season, but there still those who didn’t think we played enough region contests. This even though we still won the conference regular season championship,” said Petersen, who is 35-17-8 in three seasons at Clayton State . “This season we are playing more region games, and against more ranked opponents.”
Clayton State will play 11 home games this season within the friendly confines of Laker Field. It all starts on Aug. 24 with an inter-regional showdown against Tampa at 7:30 p.m. In addition, Clayton State also plays host to the Laker Shootout again on Labor Day weekend – Aug. 31 against Belmont Abbey and Sept. 1 against Anderson .
In addition, the Lakers also play five more non-conference home games. The headliner is Oct. 24 against defending Conference Carolinas champion Limestone, which went 13-3-1 last season in advancing to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Also visiting Laker Field are Savannah College of Art and Design and former Laker head coach John Rootes on Sept. 12, plus Tusculum on Sept. 15, area Division III power Emory on Oct. 3 and North Greenville on Oct. 16.
The Clayton State non-conference road slate should be just as challenging. The Lakers are at pesky Lees-McRae on Sept. 6 and Brevard on Sept. 7, plus Erskine on Sept. 19 and NCAA Tournament participant Montevallo on Oct. 9.
Despite the loss of longtime power USC-Upstate to NCAA Division I status, Clayton State still faces a stellar Peach Belt Conference schedule. The key showdowns are road battles at USC-Aiken on Sept. 22, at Georgia Southwestern on Oct. 13, and a possible conference title tilt at NCAA participant Lander on Oct. 20. The Lakers play host to UNC-Pembroke on Sept. 29, North Georgia on Oct. 6 and Francis Marion in the regular season finale on Oct. 27.
