COLUMBUS STATE BASEBALL EDGES ANGELO STATE 5-4
Montgomery, AL...Lefty Korey Noles pitched into the ninth inning and Rodne Rutherford had three hits and three RBI - all three coming on a rare inside-the-park homerun to lead Columbus State to a thrilling 5-4 win over Angelo State at the Division II Baseball Championship here Monday. The win keeps CSU unbeaten in the tournament and sends them to Wednesday's semifinal round at 3:30 PM. Angelo State faces Southern Indiana on Tuesday at 3:30 in an elmination game.
The two squads slugged it out like a pair of prize fighters in the early going. After the Cougars failed to score in the top of the first, Ram leadoff hitter Jimmy Cox wasted no time in putting Angelo State on the board. Cox jumped on a Noles offering and blasted it to left for a homerun. ASU appeared on its way to a bigger rally, but a missile of a throw from Brad Bowen in right field nailed the Rams' Drew Caraway at third for the first out. Noles then got consecutive groundouts to end the frame.
Rodney Rutherford got the Cougar second off to a great start when he blasted a Cody Broussard offering high off the wall in left-center for a double. He moved to third on David Brown's sacrifice and scored on a Trent Bianco single to tie the game 1-1. ASU answered in the bottom of the frame to re-take the lead on Shan Sullivan's RBI single to score Nate Hemm.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the top of the third inning. After two were out, Billy Howard dropped a single into center field and moved to second on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI single by Drew Candlin off the glove of Ram third baseman Sullivan to tie the game. Brad Linton walked to put two runners aboard for Rutherford. The junior DH hit another cannon shot deep to center field that ASU centerfielder Caraway momentarily got his glove on before slamming into the wall. The ball rolled away and Rutherford continued to race around the bases and scored with an inside-the-park, three-run homer. That gave CSU a 5-2 lead.
Noles settled in after that and held the Rams in check until the sixth inning. Matt Lenderman made Noles pay for a mistake pitch up by blasting it well over the railroad tracks beyond the left field wall for a two-run home run. That pulled ASU within one at 5-4.
Noles would then retire nine straight hitters before issuing a one-out walk to pinch-hittter Brett Nightingale in the ninth. He gave way to Blake Norrell at that point and Norrell induced a pair of fly balls to center field to earn the save and preserve the win. In all, Noles threw 142 pitches - 86 for strikes - in picking up the win. He scattered seven hits and fanned six with two walks in earning his 10th win of the year. Norrell's save was his team-best fifth.
Drew Candlin and Rutherford led the Cougars with three hits each, while Bianco and Brad Bowen added two hits each. ASU got two hits from Steven Allred to pace its seven-hit attack.
CSU advances to the semifinal round on Wednesday and will face an opponent determined by Tuesday's games. Angelo State faces Southern Indiana at 3:30 on Tuesday, followed by Cal State-LA taking on Nebraska Omaha. The CSU game Thursday will take place at 3:30 PM, while Tampa will face the other Tuesday winner at 7:30.

COLUMBUS STATE STOMPS SOUTHERN INDIANA 11-2
Montgomery, AL - Columbus State got a complete-game pitching performance from Jarrett Coker and pounded out 15 hits in taking an 11-2 win over Southern Indiana at the Division II Baseball Championship. CSU advances to face Angelo State on Monday, while Southern Indiana will face Kutztown in a survival game.
"Our strategy against these teams that we basically know nothing about is to come out and play our game - our style - and see where that takes us," said CSU head coach Greg Appleton. "We knew they were a speed team and liked to run, so we wanted to try and keep their speed guys off base. We were able to slow them down by keeping them off base and our offense hitting it so well also slowed them down."
The Cougars got off to a good start in the first inning when Drew Candlin doubled home Kurt McKee and then came home on Brad Linton's RBI flop shot into right field for a 2-0 lead. CSU added a single run in the second when McKee's liner to left was gloved, but Brad Bowen - who had tripled to deep center to lead off the fram - came home on the play, despite the fact that the Screaming Eagles completed a double play as Jonnie Geiger was running on the pitch.
Coker (11-3) made that lead stand as he cruised, allowing just single runs in the fourth and eighth innings. He scattered six hits and fanned eight hitters in the game, and did not allow a walk.
"Jarrett going along so easy tonight, it was easy to leave him out there. If he had struggled, we would have made something happen quickly with our bullpen, but we didn't need to. He had it working and we felt comfortable letting him finish it out," said Appleton.
CSU broke the game open in the fourth with four runs. David Brown led off with a double and after an error on Trent Bianco's sacrifice, Bowen blasted his second extra-base hit to right-center - a double - to score Brown. After Geiger drew a walk, McKee blistered a shot down the third base line that cleared the bases to make it 7-1.
"Our approach at the plate all season has been to try and get the leadoff hitter on and work from there. We were able to do that almost every inning tonight and that allowed us to be aggressive," said shortstop Kurt McKee.
The Cougars would add two in the sixth on a Candlin double and added single runs in the seventh and eighth to cap the scoring. In all, CSU eight extra-base hits on the night. McKee, Candlin, Rutherford, Brown, Bowen and Geiger had two hits each for CSU.
CSU faces Angelo State on Monday at 7:30 in a battle of Saturday's winners. The Rams plated a whopping 10 runs in the 10th inning on Saturday afternoon to defeat Franklin Pierce 12-3.

CLAYTON STATE RELEASES 2007 MEN'S SOCCER SLATE
Petersen releases 2007 Clayton State men’s soccer schedule
Lakers to play 13 regional contests this season, including three NCAA Tournament teams
MORROW, Ga. – May 24, 2007 – Last season, the Clayton State Laker men’s soccer team played arguably one of the toughest schedules in all of NCAA Division II – and still won the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship.
This season, head coach Pete Petersen is not letting up with the 2007 schedule, which was released on Friday. This season, the Lakers will play 13 games within the Southeast Region of Division II, and that includes three teams that advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament last season.
“We probably had one of the toughest schedules in the land last season, but there still those who didn’t think we played enough region contests. This even though we still won the conference regular season championship,” said Petersen, who is 35-17-8 in three seasons at Clayton State . “This season we are playing more region games, and against more ranked opponents.”
Clayton State will play 11 home games this season within the friendly confines of Laker Field. It all starts on Aug. 24 with an inter-regional showdown against Tampa at 7:30 p.m. In addition, Clayton State also plays host to the Laker Shootout again on Labor Day weekend – Aug. 31 against Belmont Abbey and Sept. 1 against Anderson .
In addition, the Lakers also play five more non-conference home games. The headliner is Oct. 24 against defending Conference Carolinas champion Limestone, which went 13-3-1 last season in advancing to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Also visiting Laker Field are Savannah College of Art and Design and former Laker head coach John Rootes on Sept. 12, plus Tusculum on Sept. 15, area Division III power Emory on Oct. 3 and North Greenville on Oct. 16.
The Clayton State non-conference road slate should be just as challenging. The Lakers are at pesky Lees-McRae on Sept. 6 and Brevard on Sept. 7, plus Erskine on Sept. 19 and NCAA Tournament participant Montevallo on Oct. 9.
Despite the loss of longtime power USC-Upstate to NCAA Division I status, Clayton State still faces a stellar Peach Belt Conference schedule. The key showdowns are road battles at USC-Aiken on Sept. 22, at Georgia Southwestern on Oct. 13, and a possible conference title tilt at NCAA participant Lander on Oct. 20. The Lakers play host to UNC-Pembroke on Sept. 29, North Georgia on Oct. 6 and Francis Marion in the regular season finale on Oct. 27.

CLAYTON STATE WOMEN'S SOCCER SCHEDULE RELEASED
Totty releases 2007 Clayton State women’s soccer schedule
Lakers to play nine road contests this season, including two NCAA Tournament teams
MORROW, Ga. – May 25, 2007 – The Willie Nelson classic "On the Road Again" is the perfect theme for the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team in 2007. Head coach T.O. Totty officially released the schedule on Friday, and nine of the Lakers’ 16 regular season games this upcoming season are away from Laker Field.
In fact, after the season opener at home against Gulf South Conference contender Alabama-Huntsville on Aug. 24, Clayton State will play five straight road games. The Lakers are coming off a 2006 season in which they finished 10-8 overall and third place in the Peach Belt Conference at 7-2.
"As usual, I feel we have put together a competitive schedule that will challenge our team," said Totty, who is 85-71-11 entering his 10th season at Clayton State. "We are looking forward to another successful season."
As far as the Peach Belt Conference is concerned, the two biggest games of the season are back-to-back in mid-September when Clayton State travels to Armstrong Atlantic on Sept. 15, and then plays host to Columbus State on Sept. 19. Columbus State is the defending Peach Belt regular season and tournament champion, and both the Lady Cougars and Armstrong Atlantic went 18-4-1 last season, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
In addition to Armstrong Atlantic and Columbus State, Clayton State also has conference road match-ups at USC Aiken on Sept. 22, Georgia Southwestern on Oct. 13 and Lander to close out the regular season on Oct. 20. The Lakers have conference home games against UNC-Pembroke on Sept. 29, North Georgia on Oct. 6 and Georgia College on Oct. 17.
Unlike last season, when all of Clayton State’s non-conference games were against teams from the South Atlantic Conference, Totty has spread the non-conference slate out a little for this season.
The Lakers will play three straight road games against SAC foes Lincoln Memorial (Aug. 28), Newberry (Sept. 1) and Lenoir-Rhyne (Sept. 5). However, Clayton State has also added road contests at Gulf South Conference foes Montevallo on Sept. 12 and West Georgia on Sept. 25. This will mark the first ever meeting in women’s soccer between Clayton State and West Georgia, which started its program in 2004.
In addition to Alabama Huntsville, the Lakers also play non-conference home games against Shorter on Oct. 1 and North Greenville on Oct. 16.

Story Courtesy, Mount Olive Sports Information
Kinston, NC - Tournament Most Outstanding Player Kurt McKee's two-out RBI-single in the fourth inning capped a two-run rally and put Columbus State ahead to stay as the second-seeded Cougars defeated No. 1 seed and tournament host Mount Olive 4-1 in the title game of the South Atlantic Regional in the 2007 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Saturday at Grainger Stadium. The win advances Columbus State to the Division II Baseball Championship, which gets underway Friday in Montgomery, AL
Earlier in the day, Jarrett Coker recorded a tournament-high 12 strikeouts and tossed a complete game four-hit shutout to lead Columbus State to a 5-0 win over Mount Olive and force a winner-takes-all championship game. The Cougars won five consecutive games after losing in the first round Thursday. Mount Olive, which entered Sunday's play as the lone unbeaten team after winning its first three games in the regional, set a school record for wins and finished with a 49-13 mark. Game One Box Score Game Two Box Score
Mount Olive took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the championship game as Dustin Richardson drove a two-out double to the center field wall and came home on Scott Houin's single to left field.Columbus State left five runners stranded through the first three innings before Brad Bowen keyed a two-out rally with a triple to right-center field.
Jonnie Geiger drew a walk to put runners on the corners and both runners advanced on a balk by Trojan starter Darrell Ellis (7-2). McKee then lined a 2-2 pitch to center to score Geiger and give the Cougars the lead for good.
Mount Olive had a chance to tie the game or regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Eric Lovett lined a double to right with one out and Jason Sherrer drew a walk. But Columbus State starter Bryan Kilgore got out of the inning on a 6-4-3 double play.
After Trojan reliever Ted Pelech retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, Anthony Williams beat out an infield single to lead off the bottom half of the inning. But reliever Johnny Floyd (5-2) retired the side in order and would go on to set down the first 11 batters he faced.
Columbus State added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth as Trent Bianco's single and two walks loaded the bases. Billy Howard followed with a two-out, two-run single to give the Cougars a three-run lead. Patrick Ball took over on the mound for Mount Olive and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
Mount Olive, which rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning in its second round win over Armstrong Atlantic State, had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth. Lovett lined a one-out single to left, the first hit allowed by Floyd. Sherrer drove the first pitch he saw deep to center field, but Geiger made the running catch on the warning track just in front of the 390-foot sign for the second out.
Graham Wooten, a late-game substitution, kept the Trojans' season alive with a single through the left side. But Columbus State first baseman Howard caught Williams' foul ball against the barrier just beyond the first base dugout to seal the championship for the Cougars.
In Sunday's first game, Rodney Rutherford's one-out solo home run in the bottom of the second broke a scoreless tie and McKee's two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth extended Columbus State's lead to 2-0. The Cougars broke the game open in the seventh as Bowen's RBI-double and McKee's RBI-single highlighted a three-run rally.
Coker (10-3) retired 11 consecutive batters after allowing a one-out walk in the top of the first and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up consecutive one-out singles to Houin and Sherrer. But Coker struck out the next two batters and retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced.
Mount Olive third baseman Stephen Nordan doubled in the sixth inning to finish his senior year with a school record 29 doubles on the season.
The shutout ended Mount Olive's streak of 116 consecutive games of scoring at least one run. The last time the Trojans were shut out was April 22, 2005 in a 3-0 loss to Limestone at the 2005 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament.
Columbus State, which won the 2002 National Championship, is making its third appearance in the national finals in the last six years. The Cougars begin play on day two of the national finals, taking on North Central Region champion Southern Indiana Saturday.

Post-Game Comments
"We're just fortunate to come out and beat a very, very good team. It seems like we had the ball bouncing our way. We had some tremendous performances by a lot of guys on our team, and we're happy to be going back to Montgomery."
Columbus State head coach Greg Appleton.
"The seniors got together after Thursday's loss. Four of us were starters in 2004 when we went to the World Series and we didn't want our season to end. We just started playing loose baseball again like we did in the beginning of the season. And our pitching this weekend was the best I've ever seen."
Columbus State shortstop and tournament Most Outstanding Player Kurt McKee.
"I'd like to make sure the people of Kinston understand how much we appreciate them having us here. And we really appreciate the fan support we've gotten all season. I couldn't be prouder of this team. Good boys, good players, good students, good people."
Mount Olive head coach Carl Lancaster.
"At last year's regional, we knew coming in that we were the underdog. Being in Kinston was a great opportunity and it helped out a lot being at home and having the fans here. We just got beat. Columbus State was better than us today...maybe not tomorrow or yesterday, but today, they were better than us."
Mount Olive third baseman Stephen Nordan.
