ALBANY STATE MEN UPSET BENEDICT

#5 Albany State 73, #1 Benedict 46 (men): Albany State pulled off its second – and biggest – upset of the tournament, knocking off top-seeded Benedict in relatively easy fashion.

Tyrone Evans scored 17 points to lead five Golden Rams in double figures en route to a 73-46 win over the Tigers at Bill Harris Arena at Fair Park Saturday afternoon. Albany State (14-16) will play the winner of the Kentucky State-Fort Valley State contest Sunday at 4 p.m. CST for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

Benedict (25-4) led early but scored just two baskets over a five-minute period to fall behind. Albany State led by as many as 11 points in the first half and led 34-27 at halftime.

Ahead 54-44 midway through the second half, Albany State finished the game off with a 10-0 run over a three-minute span. The Golden Rams shot 53 percent in the second half while holding the Tigers to 32 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.

Martinez Woody scored 14 points, Bennie Lewis scored 12 and Zacharry Barron added 11 for Benedict. Travon McGruder had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Albany State .
