COLUMBUS STATE SOFTBALL SWEEPS FRANCIS MARION

Columbus, GA - #2 Columbus State continued its winnings ways with a pair of shutouts over #16 Francis Marion at Lady Cougar Field. CSU took game one 4-0, and followed with an 8-0 win in five innings in the nightcap. CSU, winners of 19 straight games, improved to 34-2 overall and lead the Peach Belt Conference with a 10-2 record.

In the opener, CSU scored twice in the first inning. Erin Brown singled up the middle and advanced to second on a Danielle Aszman sac-bunt. Brown raced to third on a wild pitch and scored as the throw from the catcher went into left field for the Lady Cougars' first run. Brittany Leverett then ripped a pitch over the left center field wall for a 2-0 CSU lead.

CSU scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Cassie Cooper hit her third homer of the season for the run in the fourth. Cooper reached in the sixth on an error and came home on a Brown RBI double to make it 4-0 CSU.

CSU starter Amber Browning was in control all game as she gave up only four hits. Browning walked none and struck out 10 batters as she improved to 16-0 on the season.

Michaela Wolf (18-6) got the loss for FMU as she went six innings, allowed seven hits, four runs (three earned), with three walks and three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, CSU jumped on Wolf in the first inning. Brown and Aszman singled, and Leverett walked to load the bases for Allison Paul. Paul then delivered a two-run single to plate Brown and Aszman. Tamela Bell followed with an RBI double to plate Leverett. Paul would later score as Cassie Cooper reached on a fielding error by the FMU shortstop for the fourth run.

CSU plated two runs in the second and fourth innings to give starter Rachael Darr (14-2) plenty of run support. Darr wouldn't need any as she tossed five innings of two-hit ball. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Wolf (18-7) was pulled after the first inning and was saddled with the loss. Jessica Johnson pitched three innings in relief and allowed four runs, four hits, walked four, and fanned one.Christie Thompson went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for the Lady Cougars. Paul and Bell had two hits apiece with two RBIs. Leverett walked three times and scored three runs.

CSU (34-2, 10-2) will travel to Savannah to face Armstrong Atlantic State on March 29th. FMU (27-9, 7-5) will entertain Georgia College & State on Sunday in a PBC doubleheader beginning at 1 PM in Florence, SC.

COLUMBUS STATE SOFTBALL SWEEPS CARSON-NEWMAN

Columbus, GA - CSU's Allison Paul smacked a three-run homer in the sixth inning of game one and CSU took advantage of three Carson-Newman errors in game two as the Lady Cougars continued their winning ways with a doubleheader sweep over the Eagles. CSU won game one 3-1 and took the nightcap 6-2. The Lady Cougars have won 11 straight games.

In game one, the two teams were scoreless until Hillary Hammond launched a solo homer in the third to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Eagle starter Stephanie Templeton scattered five CSU hits through the first four innings but escaped damage each time.

In the CSU fifth, Erin Brown led off with single, but was thrown out at second attempting to steal. Danielle Aszman roped a double and Brittany Leverett walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Paul then ripped her game-winning home run, a three-run shot, to give CSU a 3-1 lead. The homer was Paul's fourth of the year.

CSU starter Rachael Darr (11-2) made it hold up and went the distance. She gave up four hits, allowed one run, walked one, and fanned six. Templeton suffered just her second loss of the season for Carson-Newman as she fell to 12-2. She gave up nine hits, three runs, three walks, and struck out five.

Brown went 3-for-4 with her 13th double of the season and Tamela Bell went 2-for-2 for CSU. Mandy Stevens went 2-for-3 for Carson-Newman. CSU left seven runners on base.

In the nightcap, Carson-Newman scored an unearned run in the first inning. With two outs and runners at first and second, Stevens hit a soft liner to CSU center-fielder Cassie Cooper that she dropped for the Eagles' first run.

In the second inning, Hammond was at it again. The Eagle rightfielder launched her second homer of the day to left to give Carson-Newman a 2-0 advantage.

The flood gates opened in the bottom of the third inning with two outs. CSU's Paul struck out with two runners on, but the third strike was in the dirt and the throw to first to complete the play hit Paul in the back which allowed the first CSU run to score. Ginny Walsh then made them pay with a three-run homer to left to give CSU a 4-2 lead. The damage didn't stop there. Bell singled and scored on a dropped fly ball by Hammond in right. Amber Lanier delivered the final blow, a run-scoring double to give CSU six unearned runs in the frame. The Eagles (19-5) committed three errors in the inning.

CSU starter Amber Browning closed things out with yet another solid performance in the circle. She allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, walked none, and fanned six. She didn't allow a hit after the second inning. She has allowed only 11 runs all season and has 130 strikeouts in 89 innings pitched.

Jessie Armstrong (7-3) got the loss for Carson-Newman. She went six, allowed nine hits, six runs (none earned), with three walks, and one strikeout. Whitney Durham and Whitney Hickam had the other two hits for the Eagles.

Ginny Walsh went 2-for-3 with her fourth home run of the season and Brittany Leverett chipped in going 2-for-3 with a run scored for CSU.

CSU (26-2) will take its 11-game winning streak to Spartanburg, SC to play in the USC Upstate Invitational over the weekend. The Lady Cougars have four games scheduled on Friday and Saturday with bracket play on Saturday evening and on Sunday.
