SOUTH REGION MEN--at Cleveland, Miss.--Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday
#8 Stillman (21-9) at #1 Delta State (29-1)
The nationally top-ranked Statesmen play host to the Tigers in the 1-8 match-up. Stillman surprised the experts by winning their first-ever SIAC tournament title in their inaugural season in that league. The Tigers are no strangers to playing against the giants, though, as they upset a then top-ranked Montevallo team earlier in the season.
#4 Arkansas-Monticello (19-10) vs. #5 North Alabama (18-10)
More than a week after routing the Lions 81-62 in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference tournament, the Boll Weevils must turn around and face them again in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament. Only this time the loser of this contest will see their season come to an end. Basically, look for an intense, close game from wire-to-wire.
#3 Alabama-Huntsville (22-7) vs. #6 Rollins (23-7)
The Chargers do battle against the Tars in what probably could be the best game of the first-round so far. Rollins needed overtime to edge a scrappy Barry squad 57-56 for the Sunshine State Confernce tournament title, while UAH advanced to the semifinals of last weekend's GSC tournament before losing to Delta State.
#2 Montevallo (26-4) vs. #7 Benedict (20-6)
The Falcons face another pack of Tigers in a battle of regular-season champions; UM from the GSC East, and Benedict from the SIAC. The Tigers still managed to earn at-large bid to the NCAA tournament despite being upset by ninth-seeded Miles in the SIAC tournament.

NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW--PART 2

The Lady Bears host the Lady Indians in a battle of conference tournament champions. Shaw won the CIAA tournament, while Newberry earned its first-ever South Atlantic Conference tournament title as the fifth seed.
#4 North Carolina Central (22-6) vs. #5 Georgia College & State University (17-13)
The Lady Bobcats overcame an up-and-down performance during the regular season to win the Peach Belt Conference tournament, which included an upset win over top seeded Clayton State last Saturday, followed by a dramatic overtime win over Francis Marion 89-83 in the title game a day later. Those wins catapulted the Lady Bobcats to their third NCAA tournament appearance in the last five years. Now GC&SU faces a North Carolina Central squad that earned its way to the South Atlantic Regional by way of an at-large bid.

Despite having the worst winning percentage (.552) of all eight teams in the South Atlantic Region, the Spartans did manage to earn their way into the NCAA tournament under first-year head coach Tammy George. Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Yakeeshia Ross will try to lead Upstate to a potential upset win over the South Atlantic Conference regular season champion Bulldogs.

Tampa had been flying under the radar prior to the surprise win over the Lady Tars, therefore, this is a squad that DSU shouldn't take lightly.
#4 Rollins (28-1) vs. #5 Florida Gulf Coast (28-1)
This is perhaps the best of the four first-round match-ups, as the Lady Eagles make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament as a D-II member. On the other hand, the Tars are no strangers to postseason play, as they will make their seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the last eight years, and their ninth overall. It's too bad only one of these teams will move on to the second round.

The Lady Wildcats were hardly challenged during the SIAC regular season, but fell 73-68 to Paine in last Sunday's SIAC tournament final at Birmingham, Ala. LANDER MEN UPSET COLUMBUS STATE
Perhaps the biggest upset in Peach Belt Conference tournament occurred Friday night in Greenwood, S.C., where #8 seed host and top seed Lander rallied from a 10-point deficit, and stunned top-seeded Columbus State 81-74. The Bearcats (9-20) will now face the fifth-seeded USC Upstate (18-9), who knocked off fourth-seeded Clayton State 68-67.

The final day of the regular season has arrived, and while Fort Valley State (25-1, 19-0) has already wrapped up the SIAC regular season title, the Lady Tigers and Lady Lions will battle for no worse than a second place tie. The Benedict women routed Paine 84-61 on Jan. 31 in Columbia, S.C., and can clinch the #2 seed for next week's SIAC tournament outright with the season sweep of the Lady Lions. By the way, the Lady Tigers did give FVSU all it could handle Thursday night before losing a 61-60 heartbreaker to the Lady Wildcats on the road.

CLAYTON STATE WOMEN KNOCK OFF NORTH GEORGIA
The Clayton State University women's basketball team spoiled the perfect Peach Belt Conference season of the North Georgia College & State University Lady Saints by pulling off a stunning 76-75 win in overtime at Dahlonega, Ga Wednesday night. The loss snapped not only snapped a 15-game winning streak for NGCSU, but also gave the Lady Saints their first-ever PBC loss in their inaugural season in the league, as they fell to 22-4 overall, and 18-1 in conference action. That's because the Bobcats must travel to Columbus, Ga. to face a Cougars squad that has won seven straight games, the latest a 94-89 triumph at USC Upstate Monday night. The win was the 500th career coaching victory for veteran CSU head coach Herbert Greene, who also earned 400th career win at Upstate, which was then USC Spartanburg.

TOP WOMEN'S GAME
UNC Pembroke (6-1, 1-1) at North Georgia (6-0, 2-0)--Thursday 5:30 p.m. EST
The Lady Saints have proven their doubters wrong thus far in their first season in the Peach Belt Conference, as they have downed long established programs Augusta State and USC Aiken in their first two games. Now the North Georgia face their first real test of the young season, as they play host to a Lady Braves team that has split its first two PBC contests. It's too bad the Lady Saints can't play in the conference tournament come March, as they're ineligible for postseason play since this is their first year as an NCAA Division II member.

D2SS NEWS AND NOTES--12/14/2005
With Christmas just around the corner, here's one final recap of the fall sports season, as well as some early thoughts on the basketball season. So, without further ado, let's get started.
NCAA TOURNAMENT REVIEW: D-II South Nation was well represented in the NCAA Division II tournaments in men's and women's soccer, as well as volleyball. The main problem was most of those teams didn't even make it past the first two rounds, let alone the Final Four.
Case in point, the University of North Alabama Lions volleyball team, which had just one loss heading into the South Central Regional. The top seeded Lions reached the second round of the regionals before being upset by Central Missouri State. The loss ended UNA's season at 36-2. Other teams in D-II South Nation didn't fare well, either, as the Gulf South Conference's other NCAA tournament representatives, Harding and Alabama-Huntsville, were eliminated in the first round by Washburn and Truman, respectively. Also, five-time SIAC tournament champion Albany State also fell in round one to UNA, as the Lions swept the Lady Rams in three game. Finally, Peach Belt Conference tournament champion Francis Marion was sent packing by eventual Final Four participant Tampa after the first round of the South regional, as the Patriots found themselves on the wrong end of a season-ending three-game sweep against the Spartans.
In women's soccer action, the University of West Florida Argonauts advanced the farthest in the NCAA tournament, defeating fellow GSC foe Lincoln Memorial 3-1 in the first round, shutting out Tampa 1-0 in the second round, before being blanked themselves by Carson-Newman 2-0 in the national quarterfinals. The loss gave UWF a season ending record of 19-2-2 overall. As for the Peach Belt Conference, that league's only representative, Clayton State, saw its season end in abrupt fashion, as the Lakers fell to Carson-Newman 2-0, ending their season at 15-3-2.
Finally, in men's soccer, Lander was one of three PBC squads to advance to the NCAA tournament in 2005, as the Bearcats knocked off league rivals UNC Pembroke and Clayton State to earn a quartefinal appearance. However, Lynn proved to be too much for Lander in that cotnest, as the Knights cruised to an easy 8-0 win. By the way, Lynn fell in the national semifinals to eventual national champion Fort Lewis (Colo.) 6-4 on Dec. 2.

Still, it's never too early to talk about basketball in D-II South Nation. Starting things off with Gulf South Conference women's basketball, it seems that the balance of power just might reside in the West Division, with Ouachita Baptist off to an 8-0 start, while Delta State is 7-0 as of Dec. 13. If that's not enough, at least three teams have at least one loss thus far, with Arkansas Tech (6-1), Henderson State (6-1), and Christian Brothers (5-1) all sporting a combined 17-3 record. But don't count out Harding, whose Lady Bisons are off to a 7-2 start. In the East Division, Valdosta State and West Florida might the teams to beat when conference play starts after New Year's Day, with the Lady Blazers starting at 7-1, while West Florida is 6-2.
On the men's side, Montevallo currently holds the nation's top ranking at the NCAA Division II level, as the Falcons are off to their one of their best starts in school history at 8-0. First-year head coach Mike Helfer got his first GSC East win on Dec. 10 when the Blazers downed West Florida 74-69. That victory gave the VSU men an early leg up on their other division rivals, as they improved to 1-0 in GSC East action. The Blazers are also riding a current five-game winning streak, the latest win coming in a 105-82 win over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on Dec. 14 Also, Alabama-Huntsville has gotten off to a hot start, as the Chargers are 8-1, and currently ranked 22nd in the nation. The West Division has three teams with identical 6-1 records, with Arkansas Tech, Central Arkansas, and Delta State flexing their muscles. That's not to mention Harding has been hot starting out of the gate, as the Bisons are sporting a 7-2 mark, while Arkansas-Monticello is 4-1. So, no matter how you look at things, the Gulf South Conference once again will be one of the nation's hot spots for competitive NCAA Division II basketball.

After earning a hard-fought 74-69 overtime Peach Belt Conference win at Augusta State Saturday night, the Lady Bobcats will face a stiff non-conference test against the Lady Tars at home. It doesn't get any easier for head coach John Carrick and his charges from there, as the GC&SU women will host Shaw Wednesday.
