COUNTDOWN TO MAY MADNESS

NOTE: With the selections for the 2005 NCAA Division II baseball tournament being revealed Sunday (05/15/2005), this is the last chance for a few teams to impress the selection committee prior to the regionals. With that in mind, D-II South Sports presents the final installments of "Countdown To May Madness" for 2005.

Rankings are courtesy of NCAA Sports.com.

Teams in conferences covered by D-II South Sports are listed in BOLD type.

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION

1. North Florida

2. Kennesaw State

3. Francis Marion

4. Armstrong Atlantic State

5. USC Aiken

6. GC&SU

7. Erskine

8. Limestone

ANALYSIS: Six teams from the Peach Belt Conference again occupy the top spots in this week's South Atlantic regional poll. AASU has helped its case for getting into the NCAA tournament tremendously, as the Pirates won two out of three games from USC Aiken last weekend to take a .500 record (13-13) in PBC play heading into their final regular season series at Kennesaw State. Speaking of the Fighting Owls, they can assure themselves of finishing no worse than second place by winning at least one game against AASU this weekend. Meanwhile, the Pacers also won two of three games against Lander in their regular season finale, but with a #5 regional ranking, they must wait for any word on a possible NCAA tournament bid.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION

1. Delta State

2. Abilene Christian

3. Central Oklahoma

4. Texas A&M-Kingsville

5. Incarnate Word

6. West Alabama

7. North Alabama

8. St. Edward's

ANALYSIS: North Alabama and West Alabama each pulled off upsets over nationally top ranked Delta State to earn a spot in the championship round of the Gulf South Conference tournament Wednesday. The Lions downed the Tigers 7-6 in 11 innings to force a second title game, but UWA bounced back to win the GSC title with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. But whether that late run will help either team get into the NCAA tournament remains to be seen.

MUST SEE GAMES--BASEBALL--WEEK OF MAY 10-14, 2005

NOTE: With the final week of regular season play in the Peach Belt Conference, and the final day of action in the Gulf South Conference tournament right around the corner, this is the last chance for a few teams to impress the selection committee, as the selections for the NCAA Division II baseball tournament will be made next Sunday (05/15/2005). D-II South Sports will highlight the following games that could have a bearing on postseason play.

All national rankings are courtesy of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

#3 Florida Southern (42-9) at #2 North Florida (40-11)

Game times:

Tuesday 7 p.m. EDT

Wednesday 1 p.m. EDT

#23 Tampa (34-16) at #2 North Florida (40-11)

Game times:

Friday 7 p.m. EDT

Saturday 1 p.m. EDT

The Peach Belt Conference champion Ospreys play four games in five days against two nationally ranked Sunshine State Conference foes to end the regular season. Don't be surprised if UNF gets the top seed and host role for the South Atlantic Regional May 19-21.

Audio:

North Florida

Lander (29-25, 10-16) at #16 USC Aiken (37-16, 14-13)

Game times:

Wednesday 7 p.m. EDT

Thursday (Doubleheader) 4 p.m. EDT

The Pacers were once ranked as high as eighth in the nation. But now they basically have to sweep the entire series against the Bearcats to assure themselves of an NCAA tournament berth.

USC Aiken

#14 Armstrong Atlantic State (33-14, 13-13) at #11 Kennesaw State (33-19, 17-10)

Game times:

Friday 5 p.m. EDT

Saturday (Doubleheader) 1 p.m. EDT

After spending most of the season with a losing record in PBC play, the Pirates finally reached the .500 mark last weekend, as they won out of two out of three games against USC Aiken. AASU can finish above .500 in conference games by winning two out of three on the road against the Fighting Owls. Speaking of KSU, the Fighting Owls can lock up second place in the PBC with at least one win in this three game series.

COUNTDOWN TO MAY MADNESS--PART TWO

NOTE: In our last installment, D-II South Sports profiled the South Atlantic region. This time, we go to the South Central region, and the Gulf South Conference. So, what are we waiting for? Let's go!

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION

1. Delta State

2. Abilene Christian

3. Central Oklahoma

4. North Alabama

5. Texas A&M-Kingsville

6. West Florida

7. Incarnate Word

8. St. Edward's

ANALYSIS: While Delta State is likely cruise into the NCAA tournament as the top seed in the South Central region, the GSC's other two teams ranked in the regional poll, North Alabama and West Florida, will likely have to win the upcoming conference tournament to have any chance of advancing to postseason play.

COUNTDOWN TO MAY MADNESS--PART ONE

NOTE: It's the first full weekend of May, and oh, Mother's Day is drawing near, too. Let's breakdown this week's NCAA Division II baseball regional rankings. In the first of two-part installment, we'll focus on the South Atlantic region.

SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION

1. North Florida

2. Kennesaw State

3. Francis Marion

4. USC Aiken

5. Armstrong Atlantic State

6. GC&SU

7. Erskine

8. Limestone

ANALYSIS: With the top six teams in this week's South Atlantic regional poll, the Peach Belt Conference could send four teams to the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years. However, it'll be a question of which teams enter the regionals, as only the top four teams in each region will advance to postseason play.

Now that North Florida has clinched the Peach Belt Conference, as well as an apparent No. 1 seed in the upcoming South Atlantic Regional, the big question that remains is which teams will join the Ospreys. Francis Marion and GC&SU have already completed their seasons, but must await the outcome of several remaining PBC series before the selections are made.

MUST SEE GAMES--BASEBALL--WEEK ENDING MAY 5-7, 2005

Now that North Florida has clinched the Peach Belt Conference title, the real battle is now for second place in the league, and then some. With that in mind, let's take a brief at two key series this weekend.

USC Aiken (36-14, 13-11) at Armstrong Atlantic State (31-13, 11-12)

Game times:

Friday 3 p.m. EDT

Saturday (Doubleheader) 1 p.m. EDT

The Pacers return to action after a long absence to face the Pirates in a key Peach Belt Conference series. AASU can make a late run towards second place, and maybe an NCAA tournament berth, by sweeping both USCA and Kennesaw State in its final games. However, the Pirates will need lots of help along the way to see any trace of the postseason. On the other hand, USCA hopes to re-group after being swept by North Florida two weeks ago.

AASU

Lander (28-23, 9-14) at Kennesaw State (31-18, 15-9)

Game times:

Friday 5 p.m.

Saturday (Doubleheader) 5 p.m.

With North Florida already having locked up first place in the Peach Belt Conference, Kennesaw State must settle for second place. But the Fighting Owls will need at least a split of its final six games, plus a lot of help just to finish that high. Believe it or not, the Bearcats can finish PBC play with a winning record (15-14) if they win all six of their remaining games, barring any cancellations.
